I messed up bad at work and the guilt is killing me!!!!

I'm an optician and sell gllasses. I made a pair of glasses for a friends wife, and I have not paid for them yet, and its been a year. My boss was going through the books and saw that outstanding order, what did I think it would just vanish. I have the money that's not the issue, it's that I have hid the invoice for such a long time.
I have been at my job for 6 years , and have feelers out for a new one as well. If I pay for them now, I might as well give my notice at the very same time. Tell me what you guys think, I know I'm fvcked.

No.....Just tell the owner that you completely forget about it and you will take care of it. It was an honest mistake (lets just assume that). You have been there for 6 years and you screwed up only once? Thats really good.

I've skrewed up more than once, that's the thing. I don't want to leave my job as I like what i do, I just have always hated my boss for many different reasons.

That's what's been eating at me for so long. That mistake I made and the fact that I've been employed so long and am well trusted too. I have keys for both store and run 1 of them by myself.

If your boss found that invoice does that mean he also knows it was you, or will he find out it was you?

If so your busted. Fess up, apologize for not getting money up front and pay him.

If not, have you ever heard the expression: "Let sleeping dogs lye"

My name is on the invoice, and after work tonight I'm going to have to fess up and pay the invoice. Unfortunately I can't let sleeping dogs lay. I feel like this might be the last straw with my boss. He's been ranting lately about trimming down the staff and even though I wouldn't mind leaving my job, I don't want to leave under these circumstances. I barely slept a wink last night thinking about all the different scenarios about how this day will play out. I'm not in the same office as him today, but wish i was so i could get this over with. I can't do this over the phone.

Possible solution: When i get to work, I say i found that job, called the patient and got a credit card payment and that I'll drop them off the glasses after work.

You brought a new customer into the store, a friend's wife, who used to go to a competitor's store. You forgot all about the invoice, but will pay it now. Of course you didn't try to HIDE it, by never filling out the paperwork (as you COULD have done if you were really trying to cheat him.).

"Here is the payment. Please dock my pay."

Just got in and ran the credit card and got the glasses paid for, now all I have to do is come up with some elaborate reason why they weren't paid for in the first place.

She is a personal friend, and a new customer. She didn't have her credit card with her at the time, so you gave her the benefit of the doubt and then you both forgot about it. She is ECSTATIC about her new glasses and has told all her friends about the store.

Ask her to write a little note to manangement saying how helpful you were and how embarrassed she is that she forgot to pay.

    Good luck.

Jk man, don't worry about it. Something like that happened to me when I worked at a video game store. If you have been with the company for 6 years then odds are that they are not going to suspect you. Goodluck man

The more you think about it before hand, the less honest its going to sound. Just come up with a good reason, there are a million but only you can come up with the best reason and just dont overthink it. In the end make sure there is an apology and youll be fine.

Dont think up an excuse just tell him the truth.

You were never trying to rip him off so why do you feel you got to make something up? Why would you compromise your integrity by making up a lie for something that was an honest mistake?

I just got a voicemail from the other job I applied to recently, it's right around the corner from where I work now and I'll have to have a meeting with them to discuss the particulars. I wouldn't mind leaving where I work, I love most of the people I work with, for a better job if its available.
I think I've got everything figured out, I'll know when I get to work on Friday, if I still want to work where I work or if its time to move on.
Thank you everyone for their honest opinions, I really appreciate all the help.

Nope, accidents happen.. invoices get lost.. pay up, and say, "hey, i thought i had paid that, but when i went back through my checkbook it seems i didn't"

    "so here ya go"..

Unless you have already said to him "I don't know who or what that's all about"

then you are screwed, but they afore mentioned "" might still work for ya..

He asked me about it yesterday and I said I'd look into it, and figure it out by today. I know I'm skrewed because I'm not supposed to dispense glasses with paying first, even if they're really good friends.

lol, you are feeling way to guilty for like no reason imo. I've not billed for way bigger amounts and never told anyone. Implants, think 10's of thousands.
