    Need to buy home gym....

Due to some life changing events I will not be able to go to the gym as frequently as I normally do. So I was thinking that I would invest into a home gym and that would afford me the opportunity to lift as time allowed at home. I wanted to know what equipment you guys think might be benefical for home use from those that have gyms at home or have looked into getting one for home.

I want mostly free weights and want to be able to do anything that I can do at the gym. I will also buy a full set of dumbells. I did see a smith machine that looked pretty nice, but I may need to buy a seperate bench to be able to do the barbell bench press or would doing the smith machine lifts and then adding dumbells be enough?

I like this smith machine with dumbells and curl bar. Anything else you guys can think of?

I will also be keeping my membership at the gym so that I can go on my lunch breaks and still be able to use some of the gym perks. But the home gym will be there if I need it!

The smith machine is a great machine and all, however... if for somereason you have to move that would suck breaking that monster down.

IMHO - A squat rack and adjustable bench is all you really need and would cost a 10th less then that thing. Thats just me though... If you own your own home and you plan on staying there for at least 2+ years then absolutely go for the gym.

The good ones cost bank. I have an adjustable bench with some loose plates and bars and that supplements my gym visits just fine, of course I usually prefer to go to the gym. If you are barely going to be able to make it to the gym then go ahead and spend the dough. Be aware that many of those machines have low "weight limits"; or at least a lot of the reasonably priced ones do. Part of why I don't have one.

If you can afford to grab some dumbells you would have your own gym.

weider stuff sucks. Also you can do so much with a smith. Juist because you put free weight on there doesnt make it free weights its a machine. You would be better off with a good home gym then a smith.

Best bang for your buck would be a cage or squat rack

I will look into the cage. I didn't see one of those online, but I only searched for a minute before I had to run this morning.

I was hoping to find something that would hold some descent weight and last me for a long time.

Yeah, I was prepaid to pay some dough for it. I try to take my lifting seriously and if I miss one day, I go on my period!

I think that is the best option to. Thanks everyone for the ideas. I do plan on moving in the next couple of years and I hear you on putting that thing together and taking it down. I was going to py Dick's to put it together, but I didn't think about breaking it down.

I may have to go to the gym on leg days. Those leg machines are a little salty. I want to pay about $1000 - $1500 for the rack and weights.
