    anyone know anything about cars?

OKay so my stupid a$$ goes out to jump start my car today to take it up to the shop because the back tail lights would not turn off which killed my batt, hence me jumping it. But it was in the morning and I was half asleep still and I hooked the cables up backwards, I heard a fan or something go on in my car for about 4 seconds and stopped. And now my car will not do anything nothing inside will turn on all I hear is the beeping sound from my door being open, but other than that the car is pretty much dead.
Do any of you know what this could of done? I heard it could of blown my alternator ruined my batt and maybe fried my ECU.....which i am hoping it is only the batt and that the fuse just blew. but I thought I would ask someone who knows a little more about this than I.
My car is a 05 Subaru Imprezza Sedan

Future reference: if your brake lights arent turning off try tapping the break a couple times, happened to me before. As for your current problem i have no idea.

It's not the alternator, car would still start.
Try unhooking the batt to reset the computer.
car should still start with a messed up batt on a jump, or at least do something.
maybe starter motor if you turned the key with poles reversed.
    check all fuses.
    any more specifics on symptoms?

usually if its the starter motor, you will hear a clicking noise...depending on the yr of the car you can tap the starter motor with a stick or hammer and it will usually start if its that...id try the starter solenoid...its a couple bucks and its cheaper than replacing a starter motor....id also check all your fuses

your tail light problem I think would most likely be a ground problem. trace the wires phsyically and make sure they're not grounding out on anything.

if you tap it it wont start, ur thinking about using a screw driver to bypas it and start it up..

you could've really fried up the system, it also could be a few burned up wires(the wrong connection will melt/ screw up wires.)

so check things like that, 12 volt connections and all your grounds

i'd tell you, but daddy says don't ever do for free what someone is willing to pay you to do..

    jk.. not really

Can't tell what it is without simply replacing the battery, then a diagnosis can be done..

You're really lucky the battery didn't blow. Unfortunately I've seen this mistake several times before and the outcome can be as cheap as a blown fuse (rare) or as costly as a blown ECU. First check out your fuses, especially the one for your ignition/starter, if that looks good then I would replace that battery. Between the complete drain and the reversed polarity and the fact that it's over 3 years old anyway you will want a fresh battery anyway. If it's still dead then you more than likely fried the ECU. Unfortunately, more often than not I've seen this mistake call for a new battery new ECU(s) and fried wiring. Good luck... Let us know the outcome.

Well I checked all the fuses and none of them seem to be blown,
I tried jumping it when I got back this morning and nothing came on when I turned the key only the beeping sound, but the tail lights work and the hazards also work, and the power door locks work, do you think with all of these working that it could still be the batt?

I'd say your ecu is fried. Try unhooking the battery and pluging it back in. This should reset a functional ecu.

does it click when u try to start. If the dash lights are not turining on, it could be the ecu....
    good luck

Yea I unhooked the batt and hooked it back up and nothing happen, so I pretty much did everything I can do myself, I don't really know that much about cars, so I have no choice now but to take it to a shop and have someone else look at it.
Do you guys have any Idea how much it would cost to have a new ECU installed? if that is the case.

Oh yea and no it does not click or anything when I turn the key.

You can change the ECU your self.... It's not hard. Get one from a junk yard that matches the make and model. You can also order refubished ecu's.....
If you get a new they can cost a nice penny.....better if you know a freind with the same car you can just borrow his ecu to check.. i did that once with my Turbo eclipse

If you do go to a shop your atleast looking at about 300-700 depending on their labor charge and how slow they work....

Call a couple of shops with good reputation ....

That's a simple one bro. When you hook up cables backwards u reversed the polarity of the battery. You should buy a new battery.

Yeah well I got a fuse tester and turns out it was the main fuse that had blown 100amp and I had to order one from the deal which costs about 40bucks so I got off easy
