A friend of mine told me that if you want to put on size, working out any longer than 45 minutes a session is counter productive. Is this true? My normal workout goes anywhere from 1.5-2 hours 3 times a week...

not true, depends on how your working out. i agree that 2 hrs can be excessive though
You can work out long or you can work out hard. I agree with your friend, if you are working out for longer than 45 minutes your intensity is lacking.
im in and out in a hr
i try to keep mine to 1 hr sometimes i go over by 15 minutes.
All i can say is that after 45mins - 1 hour i am knackered, the muscle group for that day has been brought to failure totally...... i could not get much more from a workout and i can tell you the muscles are sore the next day..
Depends on how you are working out...
When i train each muscle twice a week my sessions go for about 1 1/2 - 1 3/4 hours
Training everything once a week they go for 1 - 1 1/2 hours
I use to believe that anything over an hour was going over board until i changed the way i train which ment longer sessions in the gym and since then i have grown more in the last 3-4 months than i have in the last year!
Thanks for all the replies
If ya in there for 2 hrs then you talking to much or taking to long a breaks between sets. Im in and out in an hour to hr 15 min.
Everyone says 45 mins and its a good starting place. The fact is that everyone is different so if you go a little over that you should be fine but you better make sure your diet and nutrition is on point to help aid in recovery.
2 hrs is too long in my opinion. Within 2 hrs i normally get in my workout and cardio.
I do 1 body part in about 40 minutes
1.5-2 hours training is possible if you're doing 2 body parts and the gym is busy.
45-60 minutes should be plenty of time. please tell us what your weekly routine is with exercises sets/reps. whats your goals as well.
