Whats a good safe exercise for neck size?

I want to bring up my neck. My traps are good but my neck sucks. It only looks good when I am on cycle and holding some water, otherwise I think it looks out of proportion. Am I stuck with genetics or is there an effective exercise to build up the width of the neck?

I know there used to be head straps in every gym until they found out that they were cutting off blood movement during exercises (or something like that)

Not really sure, the power exercises like deadlifts have really made my neck larger naturally,

I will check back here too and see what some of the others say, i know that the neck muscles are very easy to pull and that if there is anything it should be done with great care.

    Good luck bro

I agree with the deadlifts. Haevy deads without straps (that is important) have thickened up my neck over the years.

Also the head/neck harness is an option. Id be interested to see proven studys on their being problems like you listed OL. Not saying theyre unfounded I just have never heard of it.

Wrestlers do a lot of work with bridging to strenghten their neck but im not sure what physical effect that could have.

    Hey smitty,

Yeah, it is just one of those things that they say when you ask where the harness/straps have gone. I have not seen any at the gyms for years now,

    Good pic bro

Yeah I know strongmen and other strength athletes still use them, thats why I was curious.

Polska, try asking this question again in the powerlifting forum. Some of the other PL/Strongmen might have some tips.

I really tense my neck up on any heavy exercise and that has definitely increased the size of my neck.

I would say heavy deads, squats, and bench have helped most

    I ordered a harness myself.

But prior to that I had been doing extension (back) and flexors (forward) with a plate wrapped up in a towel. I would lay on the flat bench with the end of the bench right at the base of my neck. Lay the plate on the front or back and rep. I would not push it to failure or anything crazy.

I am sure DSM could enlighten you on this. He has monster traps and neck muscles. He just needs to do legs more often......

neck bridges should work and try this also drop the wieght for a few sets when u do bar shrugs tuck ur chin almost to ur chest and hold ur shrug at the top for a three count while concentrating on flexing ur neck u should get a pretty good pump
