No Shakes? what do you do pre/post WO

I have heard a few guys (AdamGH) say they do not think protine shakes are of any use and 6 squares a day is better. What do you do for pre and post workout nutrition? I realize it can be done but would like to hear some experiences with these two very imporatant intake times. i prefer to eat as natural as possible because i feel so much better when I do. I would really like to cut these out in favor of a stronger/more natural nutritional intake.

    discuss-

After your workout the protein has to be available to your muscles, via the one-carbon-pool (OCP). If you ate eggs 4 hours before workout, then amino acids from that meal would be available in the OCP around post workout time. Because shakes can usually be digested and transfered into the OCP much faster (i.e <20mins) you can afford to ingest them much closer to your post workout time.

If you're eating protein all day long and you line up your different protein sources (Beef takes a long time to asimulate, chicken less, eggs less again) so that amino's are available from most of those meals at the time you need it most (post workout) then your muscles will have what they need. I guess that requires more planning though.

    Hope that made sense.

I include shakes because they're a great time saver and I like milk drinks.

i would continue to drink your pre and post workout shakes.it is a convienient way to ensure that you are getting proper amounts of protien in the moments most crucial......the rest of your meals try to go with whole foods.just my .02

Science aside I eat a solid meal prior to workout cause for some reason if I take a shake prior I feel weak within the first exercise. I have a shake post workout but if you want to eat a solid meal I'd eat egg whites PWO for protein. I wouldn't drag that shit to the gym hence why I use shakes. Cheaper for one and easier. I only have 4-5 shakes a week, thats probably as much as a newbie has in a day. LOL. Rest is solid food.

A shake imo is better then a meal. Fast easy, has bcaa's and I can bet 3/4 of BBs use this method. You'll see people say "NO! real food is better" but I don't agree. Stick with the shake, and have a good solid meal 1.5 hours after bro. I feel like it's just magic~~

Agree or disagree with shakes, its understood you need something within 20 mins of completing your workout. A shake is definately better than nothing.

I see a couple guys bringing small grocery stores with them in their bags and have a meal in the locker room (sanitation aside), these guys are hardcore and props to them cause they have the results I wish I was dedicated enough to have.

Yes, hats are off to the guys that put that much into it.

I'll still have a shake w/oats even though I could do either method.

Shakes are a supplement to your diet and should be considered as such. The proteins are digested and the amino acids are absorbed by the body. No one can honestly say otherwise, should they be used to replace a meal, no. Are they a good addition to your diet, yes if they are figured in correctly.

when im fed up with shake (which is 80% of the time) i'll have aminos and food after WO.
if i have to have shakes i'll ONLY and just ONLY take them after WO. To the present day i havent find any shake that feels good to me. You can find very muscular people all along history and they didn't have whey protein shakes. Food is good. Supplements suck, and the more is sell them the more i see they suck.

Both bolded comments very wise. Either way works. The reason behind this is you have a 20-40 min give or take window of oppurtunity that your body is in need of protien. Whey protein is already broken down into a readily digestable protein which you body can break down and utilize within 45mins of ingesting. Either way tho, your body needs aminos and carbs PWO

EXACLTY what i do, if i drink 2 shakes one before and one after my workout ill have to shit water. I eat breakfast, then a preworkout meal, then workout, then PWO shake, then meal 45 mins after PWO shake, then 2 hours meal, etc....... i DO NOT count the shake as a meal as one shouldnt. ITs a supplement, even tho your body utilizes it PWO, its still a supplement....people start relying too much on sups when WHOLE FOOD is the key to growing.

It is hella conveniant for PWO, but the shake should ONLY be used for PWO to bring your body back to its anabolic state.....due to the catabolic state your body goes into when you train hard. Food or no food before a workout your body still burns tons of calories leaving you with a need for fast digesting protein and carbohydrates... Simple carbs in the shake help spike insulin levels which not only shuttle nutrients to muscles which includes increasing protein uptake and end result a more anabolic environment. There is a reason people use slin PWO, a natural spike in slin levels is very beneficial for muscle building IMO.

wen you talk about eating eggs to time it so it conincides with when you need post workout nutrition are you sayin that all the protein from the eggs wont be available until 4 hours later then BAM its all in your system? i thought the protein was gradually released over the four hours?

I don't think there's going to be any "BAM!!" kind of thing happening. Some foods take longer than others to digest. After digestion it's available to your body for use. It's going to be gradual, probably with a peak point in there somewhere but those eggs probably won't be the only thing in your digestive system. That's why you eat frequently - to make sure there is always nutrients available when your body wants them.

I don't try to time my eggs with my work out, I just drink a shake PWO and spend the rest of the day eating whole foods.

Hell, there's probably some beef chunks still down there from 3 days ago!

I have yet to disagree with you my man. Shakes are a great way to add Quality calories and protein (well all the macro's) along with lots of the other goodies (supplements) that are usually added into the shake. I drink shakes throughout the day between meals. I usually have 2-3 small shakes a day.
