Does anyone here threaten themselves with negative consequences and actually do them if they don't make their goals? I read about this one guy that was going to donate $10,000 to the Satanic Church if he didn't make a weight loss goal, and guess what? He made it. It was a big goal too. It was like 100+ lbs he wanted to lose.
Today, I went off the deep end on this overweight guy that I talk to in the gym whenever he's there. He always tells me "oh, I gained that weight back, but I've just been so busy that I haven't had time to eat right." I always sugar-coat the truth to him heavily whenever I talk to him. Today, not so much.
I basically said to him straight-up:
"*sigh* . . . ok, look, you're a great guy, and I like you a lot, but I am honestly tired of your excuses you keep on making for yourself. I mean, come on guy! You're easily 40% or more bodyfat. At the level, you should have absolutely no problem losing weight. Losing 3 - 5 lbs a week is possible if you eat and exercise right. You have no medical issue that's stopping you from losing this weight, so, in all honesty, I don't pity you when you keep on telling me that you gained that 20 lbs back that you lost.
If you get in a busy week and you can't get to the gym, then that's understandable. Just get in here when you can. Regardless of whether or not you get into the gym, it is still easily possible to continue to lose weight when you're not able to get in the gym during the week, not gain the weight back. Are you ready for this well-guarded secret? Here it is: don't put that burger in your mouth! See that visible wrap? Keep it that way! Visible and not in your stomach! I'm really sorry I'm talking to you this way, but it's just been getting old to see having not lost any weight for 2 years now. If you just put in the effort to lose the weight diet-wise, then you'd be at your goal of 270 right now, probably lighter . . . I think I'm done."
Basically, he told me that he needed someone to tell him that. We talked for about an hour after my workout and I went over a crapload of things that will help him reach his goal. I even told him about this negative consequences idea. He actually agreed that he would donate $1,000 to the Satanic Church and $1,000 to the KKK if he did not make his weight loss goal by the start of next school year. The guy weighs about 340 - 360 right now, and his goal is to weigh 270 by about August 25th. This guy works for security for my college, but he's also a pastor at a church, so you can imagine his hate for the two forementioned organizations.
I explained the negative consequence idea like this:
"See, you shouldn't reward yourself with foods because you worked out today. That's bad rationalization. You set maybe one cheat meal a week that you eat, and you keep strict the rest of the week. Or even better, if you have the willpower to do it, don't have a cheat meal at all. Here's an idea, instead of rewarding yourself, you can punish yourself for failure."
Then it lead into us deciding upon those two organizations to which he would make a donation if he were to fail.
I gave him my email, and we were on our separate ways. I hope I he really follows through with this because it will make me feel a whole lot better. Well, that's my story.
