itunes/mediaplaye cd playback stutter

When I try to play cd's with itunes or mediaplayer (both most recent versions) I get a small stutter. I have another player (roxio dvd max) that works fine.

On itunes the cd's rip and play fine after they are ripped, but just putting in the cd without recording it l l l e e e a a dd d s to stutter.

I googled for 2 hours and am about to give up. I tried disabeling all audio enchancements, changing sampling and acceleration, and made sure playback channels were set to dmi not poi or whatever. There's plenty of ram too. No viruses. CD's not scratched. Whats left to check? Why would this happen with media player and itunes but not roxio?

I believe the CPU is fine. The CD's play clean on another program (Roxio DVD max) but not itunes or mediaplayer, the skip is slight, but its there. I'm pretty sure theres plenty of ram. I've tried closing all apps beside itunes and it still does it. The CPU is 2ghz w/ 500 mb RAM.
