it's an amino acid, tryptophan, that causes the sleepiness, same thing with milk, the problem is that in order for it to convert to serotonin you have to have no protein present in your stomach

If turkey is making you sleepy than there is 1 of 3 problems occurring:

    1. You lack EFA's
    2. You need more BCAA's
    3. You are consuming too many carbs

i wouldn't rule out the psuedo psychological effect... though the only other thing that makes me sleepy like that is melatonin...

i know i dont lack efas.. i eat enough of those

i would think i go through enough protien sources to get a good amount of bcaa's

and im sure im not consuming too many carbs..

well then, this leaves me in a rant doesn't it???

bino, u got any scientific articles or research on the matter??

I dont have scientific studies on this stuff. I do have an account with pubmed for full access to articles etc. But the funny thing is the more and more you learn the less I read them or rely on them.

A lot of stuff I just know now or remember from my texts and studies I did back in school.

So I can explain the stuff but no studies to give you.

Low BCAA's means there is more tryptophan available in the blood and therefore higher 5-HTP concentration and once that crosses the blood brain barrier and converts to serotonin you get increased musclular fatigue. Its just like EFA's in the mechanism by which they prevent serotonin release because they run parallel and in the transport and BCAA's and EFA's can displace trypophan from binding sites on the protein carriers which would bring it in for conversion to serotonin.

I can't stand egg whites either.. also just started my diet, but i'm now mixing 8 or 9 whites with 80 grams raw oats in a bowl with some salt and splenda and pouring them into a pan to make two large oat pancakes. Then add 0 cal maple syrup (search for walden farms maple syrup on netrition.com). The pancakes are fantastic.. they don't look too great, but they taste pretty damn good.. esp with the 0 cal syrup.
