Does religion cause more bad or good?

Not to offend anyone, but for the most part I think it's a crock. Something that was made up to settle the fear of death (going on to a better place after death) and a way to control the masses (rules) and also, a way to explain the unknown: where did the sun come from? The earth? the planets? Univirse? Well god made it all!

For the most part, it serves it's purpose, to give belivers consequences outside of the law, or society for actions taken.

But it's also caused a great amount of wars, even today it does and it has a HUGE influence in US politics today.

It baffles me, that we send our kids to school 5 days a week to learn about evolution, see it proven, yet we force them to go to church on sunday and expect them to have this blind faith, that the bible is true with no evidence what so ever. You can't really belive everything in the bible, if you belive in evolution, one is wrong.

But at what point will religion start to hold us back? and was it ever a good thing to start?
