Plasma vs LCD ??

I wana buy a 46" or 50" HDTV on Black Friday...

But don't know what to get?

All the reviews say Plasma's have a better picture... but why does everyone keep buying LCD's then??

Even the guy at Best Buy told me Plasma's have a better pic - but then he told me to buy an LCD? wtf? lol When I asked him why he said because his Plasma got darker over time... i NEVER heard that one before lol

I don't play video games all day long either so I don't care about the burn in from video games.

Anyone know a lot on this subject?

If ur lounge is pretty big, if id say u are going to sit alteast 15ft from the TV, then a LCD, otherwise a plasma will be better, or get the best of both...A LED/LCD TV, latest and greatest thing on the market

i just bought a 46"LED tv(samsung) recently and love it....its supposed to be the next generation of tvs and deffinetly the best picture compared to lcd and plasma.....

plasma degrades slowly over time, it's gas over a matrix
but I've had a 55 inch plasma for 6 years and it still looks beautiful, maybe if I put in next to a brand new one of the same tv you could notice a difference.
Unless you're thinking this is the last tv you'll buy in your life, I wouldn't worry too much.
I was worried about buying it cause back in the day it was like 6 grand
you can get a better tv now for 1k.

LCD still looks very good

LED will be good when the novelty wears off of the new tech and it becomes cost competitive. Unless you want to mount it like a picture frame, it's hard to justify over double the cost.

I don't plan on buying anything over $1,300 so it's either a nice 50" Plasma or a 46" LCD...

I'm not sinking 3K into a TV.. I don't notice the dif enough in the higher priced ones..

The prices of the plasmas is what attracts me to them, but i'm trying to find out if the lil bit extra price tag of the LCD justifies it...

Plasma gives you no "ghosting" which is why it's recomended for sports.

LCD tv's need to have a high hertz to prevent ghosting.

I have a 42" 1080p Plasma - it's 2 years old and the thing is great! My parents have a 42" 1080p LCD and they love it.

I got the Panasonic Vierra and my parents own the Toshiba Regza. Both are excellent TV's.....

As far as longevity goes the new plasma TVs and LCDs are neck and neck. You'll get the same amount of hours out of each. LED LCDs haven't stood the test of time yet but right now is the latest technology you can get. You'll have to pay a premium until all these companies make back their R&D costs or until another technology rivals the market. I wouldn't buy any brand new technology until its stood the test of time and prices have come down.

I've got an LCD and Plasma. Both are great. The plasma has a better picture (deeper blacks, warmer colors) and better refresh rate than LCD. Purists will always choose a plasma over LCD. The downside to plasma is that it can suffer from burn-in, but if you're not using it as a computer monitor or watching content with static images it really is a non-issue. Newer plasma also have a white-flash feature which eliminates any burn in if it were to occur. Plasmas also reflect more light than LCDs so they're not really good in brightly lit environments. They look the best in a basement or dark room. Plasmas also are more power hungry than LCDs but if you're buying a big screen TV then the extra $50 a year in power consumption should be negligible.

I've got a 37" LCD in my bedroom and a 50" Plasma for a home theater setup in my basement. I am happy with both of them.

Yeah that isnt right. Anything can have problems though. I had a 46" LCD which developed purple and green lines that went up and down the screen on either side until the screen warmed up.

I personally go with LCD, as I play a lot of video games and plasma monitors are prone to burn-in, and also have glare issues.

I don't have experience with the new LED sets, but I hear they are the shit.

Yeah she's the only one I've known who's had problems with the plasma but that's one more than I've known for LCD's. I'm sure the technology has advanced some tho.

After 1000 hours of usage a plasma monitor should measure around 96% of its original brightness, which is barely noticeable to the naked eye. At 15,000 to 20,000 hours the monitor should measure around 80% brightness, or to state is technically, 80% of the original phosphors (gases) are being ignited.

so, if you watch tv 5 hrs a day
that's like 11 years just to get down to 80%
and it will still look good at 80%
the same thing happend with tube tv's at twice that rate, and nobody noticed or complained about it
everything else about it is as equal in terms of breaking

Wrong. Some manufacturers have pulled out of plasma because of higher price points and profit margins on LCD screens. Many of the major manufacturers still produce plasma, its the secondary manufacturers that buy their screens from OEM manufacturers (many of the major manufacturers are OEM) that have gotten out of the plasma market because there is more profit in the LCD market. IE, JVC, sharp, and toshiba buy other companies components and put their name on it. For companies who don't produce their own glass/components Plasma isn't worth it anymore. Newer plasma models have the same longevity as LCD models. The reason some have gotten out of the plasma market has nothing to do with quality/longevity. It has to do with profits

I hate it when people shit on a product because of what they've heard through the grapevine. I own both LCD/plasma and like both. It's a matter of personal preference but it's NOT a product quality issue

The first one's to hit the market were shit.
Ran so hot and energy inefficent you could fry an egg on them.
Had the lifespan of a may-fly
and cost upwards of 10k

the early adopters got fuct, so the myths are around for a reason
but the speed technology chages is amazing and the myths are dated

I would go with a plasma if I were buying one now.

i just bought a 37 inch lcd vizio brand about a year ago around the same time my friend got a plasma same size but he plays video games all day long and leaves the game paused for hours like when he goes to the gym dont ask me why he does it but we have noticed burn type marks in the screen i guess its from holding the pixels for to long

LED to be honest with you picture difference doesnt vary that much, but it does save power than the others .

plasma cost wise is better....

LCD has less issues with glare, but has better black levels.

the only thing is, movies on 240hz LCD's/LED's look ****ed up to me........ TOO crisp, scenes with special effects look extra fake to me.

120hz for me seemed about right.

i bought a 1080p plasma 50" last yr, and im more than happy with it....

i just wish it was 60"

I suggest that you have to read the reviews, especially the ones coming from the experts, if you want to have an idea on which is the best LCD TV that fits your budget. Getting the best bang for the buck is what most people aspire when they are about to buy a brand new television. Hope this helps.
