A Wide Grip Pull Up would be more free weight (a good thing), which would give you better tension on the negative, than a Wide Grip Lat Pulldown.

But when doing high rep burns - most people can't feasible use their bodyweight and need the lower resistance offered by the Lat Pulldown Machine.

So... Pull-ups because they are using bodyweight and not a frickin' cable. But if you can't hit the target reps - than Pulldowns.

Personally, I have to use pulldowns because of the multiple injuries I have suffered to my left shoulder. Chins just place too much stress on that area since I hurt it...not worth another 6 mo. of not being able to work out. However if I were healthy I would choose chins, I believe they are far superior for building the back, especially when starting out.

Weighted pull ups, whether pronated or supinated.
