I'm thinking you are intending to ask the difference between real and "generic" (at least I hope). Counterfeits, by nature of their definition, are intended to pass as the real thing without the inherent properties that make them "real". WIth regards to the generics I don't think it takes too much time to figure out who has a reputation for producing "real" and viable substitutes, as opposed to counterfeits.
