    Cable Row Failure!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Somehow our training group turned into 6 on Friday(backday). Of course, lots of ego, we're setting new pr's on some of our standard lifts. We make it to seated cable rows, our last exercise. We hit a couple of heavy warm-ups and then start using the whole stack (250 is what is listed). Very few people in this gym ever approach lifting the entire stack. Things are going good, so we decide the next set to strap on a 25lb plate (we've never done this before on the cable row). Im up last lifting the stack before we add anymore weight. Im the shortest guy, so for me, the first rep is a combination row and leg press. I have a tendency to really pull hard that first rep to get the weight within my operating range. As I pull (and leg press) the weight move about a foot and a half before the cable clip thingy lets go and I plop down on the seat. The weight goes crashing down and the cable flies out of the pullies. Fortunately no one was hurt at all, but the loud bang scared the sheeit out of most of the people in the gym.

The clip looked brand new. But obviously not up to the job. So, we double clipped both ends of the cable, hooked on the 25 lb plate and did another set.

Remember, a lot of you guys on here lifting big weight are testing the equipment for the other gym members. Be careful!

Tell me about it. They don't even bolt down most of the stuff in my gym. And the stuff that is bolted down is only done so with one bolt. Once I was on the leg press machine, I had like...I dunno 800 or something on there and one side of it came off the ground!!! WTF!!!! I told the people at the front desk, and the guy said "tell the manager yourself, she won't listen to us"...so I walk over to this dumb twat and let her know, she says that they don't bolt it down because the bolts would stress the equipment under full load and could break it.

    I'm thinking... "buy better equipment????"

    WOW!!!

    Lawsuit waiting to happen.

If you weren't in Florida, I would think we work out at the same gym. I gave the clip to the owner who just happened to be there. He gave it to the lady behind the counter. She then pulled out a bag of them and gave us a new under rated clip!

Im assuming that the clip was probably rated for 250 lbs (entire stack) and not for 275 when you strapped the extra 25 on. There is probably even a warning somewhere on the machine about adding extra weight.

Im sure the manufacturer wouldn't approve of adding weight to the stack. But, the clip broke before we added any weight.

The clip should be rated for much more then 250. When you pull the weight up with any speed, the torque will exceed the weight. I don't know by how much.

I got ya now, mis-read it the first time. In that case, you should have faked a back injury. You could have been the proud owner of a new gym!

That's a tiny ass clip. Stupid for using that in the first place. Looks like something off a cheap home gym.

Another favorite is adjustable benches with loose clips. Nothing better than having the clip pop out on an incline, while pressing dumbells over your face.

Go buy some mountain climbing clips and you should be good to go if it's for home use.. If it's the gym tell them to buy real clips before they get sued.

a guy at my gym did the same thinga few months ago n he slid off the machine, didnt get hurt but he could have! My gyms the onlyone around with DBs that go ovr 100lbs, all the ones that are older ones and have bolts that hold the plates on and the bolts are always loose and have to be hand tightned before you use them. One guy picked the 110s up to do military press and a whole side of the plates fell off, and my gym still leaves them all lose as fvck

This scares the shit out of me. Our db's go to 150 and they are the ones with the allen bolts holding the plates on. There's an allen wrench right next to the rack that we use to tighten them up. But some will not tighten. They've been dropped numerous times and some of the db bars are bent. Some so much they can't be used. Anything above 125 though is so rarely used we have to dust them off.
