Why am I not in ketosis?

Hi guys thanks for your help.

I've decided to go on a cyclic ketogenic diet. I need someone who knows what they're talking about with ketosis to have a look at my diet and tell me why I am not in ketosis yet after 5 days. Not even a trace of ketones!

Basically on a typical day I'd eat

    1. 1 scoop whey protein isolate + 1 tbsp udos oil

    2. 4 eggs scrambled with nothing added

    3. A couple of pieces of chicken breast and some full egg mayo

    4. Some low joule jelly

    5. Half a roast chicken

I know they arent exactly measured out but their is almost no carbs in any of these. maybe 5-10g in total from the diet soda I drink and a little in the whey protein.

Do you think perhaps I'm not eating enough fat?

    Thanks for the education.

Have you tried exercising to help burn glycogen in the muscles to speed it up? I've found that a good run in the early days can bring it on very quickly.

I also remember TOP saying that there should only be traces of Ketones in urine and not the really strong end of the scale.

Lose the low joule jelly. It adds nothing. eat some tuna or meat instead. perhaps try 2 eggs instead. half a roast chicken also seems too big a portion in one sitting. Don't go overboard on the protein. Its overkill otherwise.

Not sure how much your couple of chicken breast weighs too? I try and aim for about 50g of protein per meal. Portion sizes should be small not increased to compensate for having no carbs.

I also differ slightly form others in that I eat normally at weekends and don't throw pounds of carbs down my neck. So I eat moderate protein, moderate slow burning carbs and veggies. Just a normal balanced meal. Works for me.

With exercise and strict portion control you can get in to ketosis quickly, I think some people switch more quickly than others into it. for an accurate analysis you'll need to post up a weeks food and exercise log so people can spot any problem areas.

Ketostix are available at the pharmacy and they say if your in ketosis or not but after googling like mad a lot of people say experienced keto'ers dont show positive on the stix.

    Yeah, don't rely on ketostix.

If I have had <20 carbs for 5 days or so I am most likely in it.. However, I have a few questions..
    • Does your body odor smell worse/stronger than usual?
    • Do you have unusual foul breath?
    • Does your piss smell even worse than your breath?
    • Is your appetite suppressed any at all?

^If all of those apply, then you are probably in ketosis. (Provided that it is out of the norm, lol)

I usually use Alpha Lipoic Acid or Vanadyl Sulfate to help "thrust" me into ketosis..
