    martial arts

    have any of you martial arts guys studied krav maga? if so how do you rank it? im either going to try it or BJJ, i do door work and rely on brute strength dealing with messers but im for ever wrenching shoulders/aggrivating tennis elbow etc and think the simple locks and throw downs would be less taxing lol. cheers

    Ive never studied krav maga but im a brown belt in bjj. I would recommend going with bjj. You can learn alot in a short period of time if you have a good teacher. My style of bjj incorporates judo and kick boxing so I guess its not strict bjj but bjj is the most handy art to know when fighting one on one. I havent got to use my skills on the streets yet, nobody fvks with me because of my size but I wish I knew it when I was in highschool. lol Alot of bullies would be walking around with a limp to this day via inside heel hook. lol

    spounds like the plan, its all face to face encounters in this line and due to strict laws and cameras over our shoulders we cant hit first so we have to be quick and take down fast and hold the pricks, we cant pre-empt strikes, they have to move first

    I think BJJ would be the most practical. There's a reason they teach the basics of it to our soldiers.

    Krav Maga looks cool but I get the feeling in practice it wouldn't be nearly as effective as BJJ.

    Also with BJJ, you don't have to bloody someone to gain control of a situation. You can perform any number of moves and vary the degree of pain you are giving your opponennt. You can effectively end a situation without having to maim/bloody someone, which looks better for you. It's a lot easier to explain that he was the aggressor if his face isn't all fked up. Most people aren't going to want to continue the fight when their arm is about to be broken or their shoulder is about to be ripped from the socket.

    I practiced BJJ for about 6 years before MMA started becoming really popular and it became too expensive for me to continue training. I've used BJJ twice to end situations on the street.

    If thats the case than bjj is definatly your best bet. There are so many different holds its amazing. If someone grabs you from behind, with their arms wrapped around you, I like to go for the komora, take my right hand and grab their left wrist then bring my left hand under ther left arm grabbing my right forearm. Its the same move that Sacarama did to Renzo gracie in pride that bent Gracies arm backward at the elbow. Was disturbing but very effective.

    cheers guys, def sounds like bjj then, we get so many court cases in dublin, its what most of the scumbags set out for to get a claim so battered faces etc dont look good whereas an effective hold wont leave any damage

    I would never ever recommend BJJ for self defense. I teach Krav, Kick Boxing, Hapkido, BJJ and MMA.

    If you can only choose one, choose Krav. If you can, train in all of them. Depending on the setting you do not want to grapple with someone on the ground. In most bar settings whoever you are fighting has friends.

    With all of that said, I am not a KRAV LOVER. I think you should be well versed in kickboxing, BJJ and Krav.

    Krav is no joke, its basicly close quarters combat. Never trained it but have spent many hours watching docu. Its very brutal and would never fk w someone w that kind of training. I have trained bjj mix w wrestling good combo. some strikeing punch,kick,knee,elbows. Imo krav #1 in stand up and self defence, bjj/ wrestling for takedown and wrist and hip control. Imo I can dump sombody on there head, arm, hip and do just as much or more damage as if I punched somebody. If you cannot intiate an attack judo is a very good for counter attack and dumps, that could take a person a few minits to get up from.

    yeah, but i work outside on the door, so i have some space around me and im pretty handy with my kicks and headlocks. its more for disabling attacks quickly and efficently than self defense, in a street self defense situation i'd just knock em into the middle of next week lol

    The main concept behind Krav is to defend and attack at the same time. Once you start your attack it is very quick and violent.

    I was a police officer for 16 years. I am also a Police Defensive Tactics Instructor. So, let's approach your situation with that in mind. Since you work the door you are in an enforcement position.

    The idea is to get the attacker on the ground while you are still standing. You can use a variety of locks and holds once they are on the ground. That is why I like Hapkido. The challenge with Hapkido is the time it takes you to get good. Judo is also good. BJJ is great no question about that. But, I would only use it if someone took me down.

    I did KickBoxing for 4years straight hard training I had heaps of fights I got suspended once for dislocating an opponents sholder, my mate does judo and when we fvk around everynow and again he gets kicks and punishes all over his body left right and centre but once he grabs a hold of me and takes me to the floor I'm fvkd.

    by the stage of having them down id have back up from other security, its more blocking and disabling i'd like to brush up on. i knew a ju jitsu teacher way back, very small guy, but he could grab my thumb and wrist in such a manner tht i'd be on my ass in a second screamin for mercy lol

    Just to put a twist on things:: Wing Chun Kung fu is an effective style as far as blocking and disabling.. Also not really involving strength but more using your opponents force.. Simultaneously blocking and striking like Krav maga as well..
