    405 bench press

Just wanted to brag a little bit! This has been my goal for a long time, and tonight I got it! I got one rep by myself, and one more forced rep. My ass came off the bench a couple inches, but I don't care, I moved the weight! I will clean up my form later!
Oh, and I weighed myself at 201.5, so I am benching a hair over double bodyweight!
Feel free to give me all the shit you want, nothing can kill my mood!

Thanks everyone! I still am in a bit of shock. i mean, i am not going to act like I am one of a kind, because there are other that weigh 201 that can get 405, and with better form than me. But when i started lifting 7 years ago, I weighed 135, and my max bench was 80lbs! I honestly never thought I would be able to break the 400 lbs barrier. And I am currently off cycle! I am just all smiles... Cloud 9 guys

Excellent. I chased 405 for a LONG time. I now fear it might be my absolute max due to shoulder problems, though

Good Job! I am pretty damn close to that right now. But to be honest, i'm too scared to even attempt it. I stick to 315-350lbs for reps.

Yeah, I got 405 at 200 lbs when I was 18. It took 2 years to get there, though. Now at 250lbs, I got 405 for 3 easy reps. On decline I've gotten 425 for 12 reps. My triceps are stronger than everything else . Even with the back arch turning that into a decline press, it's still impressive. You're gonna f your back up if you do it all the time, though. I'd say instead of getting multiple reps, get a 405 pause press with your ass on the bench. That'd be more impressive in my book. Good work, though.

I think by this winter I will definately be able to do a "perfect" 405. One thing I have noticed about myself is that my bench goes up the most when I can get a weight with my ass off the bench first. Like, instead of trying to do every single set competition perfect, I will do every set perfect, then start to make it a little easier on myself by lifting my ass a bit when I am getting close to maxing, or trying a new max. Once i can get a new weight like that, I think its a mix of my body knowing how to move it, and me being more mentally confident, because it only takes a couple weeks for me to be able to do that same weight with my ass down, then just a couple more weeks for me to be able to do a "perfect" set but bringing it down controlled, touching it with a slight pause, then pressing it to lock out.
If i try the other route, and try to up my max by doing perfect form and perfect sets every time, I will be stuck at the same weight forever.

I am confident that within the next couple months sometime, I will be able to do 405 for a "perfect" set.
Thanks for all the comments and support guys! If this was a video on youtube, I would never hear the end of it about my ass coming up. All the 110lb guys that bench press slightly more than their gaming remotes would be telling me how much I suck because this wasn't competition quality, lol.

Once i can get this more confidently, and with more control, I will be that douche bag in the gym that gets someone to record it, and I will post a video.

    Thanks again!

Try just getting a huge arch in your back with feet tucked behind as far as possible and push into the ground with them flat on the floor. It will still turn it into somewhat more of a decline, and that's what powerlifters do. That and they use an extra wide grip so the bar isn't travelling as far, too . The other thing I see people do is bounce 405. It's a scary sight to see 405 bounce off someone's sternum. Yeah they were fine that time, but what happens next time?

Oh i am very strict about never bouncing weight, no matter what. I would rather have to turn it into a forced rep, or just have it pulled off me, then try to use it as a tool to test the flexability of my sternum, lol.

I have tried a huge arch, and right as i am about to lift, or as soon as I unrack it, my hips will start to lock up, or my lower back will lock up big time. I have been told that this will stop if I practice more, though.

By lock up, do mean cramp up? I've had that. When I do heavy reps, sometimes I have to stop, not because the weight is too heavy, but because my low back cramps.

Sorry to open up old threads but I really wanna know how you managed such a lift after only 2 years and at 18 years old?!? 405 is my target before I'm 20 so I've got like 18 months to go and can only do like 225 so basicaly I need to add 10lbs /month for the next 18 months. Do you think that's possible? Thanks in advance!
