hurt foot...what now for cardio?!?! please help!

Hey, guys. I was running Monday morning, and before I was even a couple minutes into my cardio, I had a really bad pain in my left foot (heel area). All I know is that it's been 7 days now, and it still hurts to the point where I can't run on it. Is it possible to sprain you heel?? I'm not sure what's wrong with it exactly, but I'd like to know what else I can do for cardio now that I can't run for a while?? I tried hitting the punching bag, but it's really monotonous. I tried the ellyptical, but I don't feel that I'm getting my heart rate up enough on it. Any suggestions??

    Thanks.

just on a side note.. when i was a kid i stepped on glass and got it taken out.. so i thought.. it felt normal for 3 years and i all of a sudden got a sharp pain in my heel.. i got it xrayed and there was a piece of glass in there that had a callous formed around it, and after three years my body decided to try and start pushing it towards the surface.. i had the doctor take it out and i was back in a week..

Stretch your calves....hit the pool or bike. If the pain doesn't subside after 2 weeks get it checked...may be a stress fracture.

If you have access to a pool at your gym that is a excellent form of cardio, as well it also really stretches out your body giving you long hard muscles.

Runners get them. I've had them several times in an earlier life when I used to run. For lack of a better word, it's called an impact trauma, or impact stress. It's almost like a bruise on the bone, although that is not technically accurate. Not much you can really do for it except stay off it until it feels better. I've iced my foot before and found some relief. I always preferred to run on asphalt, until I began experiencing this and other problems. In the future, it is infinately better to run on grass, like at the park. Easier on the knees/back too.

Hopefully you get some medical attention before anything worse happens.

To answer your question, swimming is by far one of the best cardiovascular methods that doesn't involve much foot work (in a sense you are putting pressure on anything)

You are utilizing nearly every muscle fiber in the body. Very good for overall cardiovascular health.
