    2 bulging discs...should i use a lifting belt?

So I have two bulging discs (L4-L5, L5-S1) and i've had an epidural and taken everything else but nothing works. I basically have just learned to deal with the 24/7 pain.
The thing is, during deadlifts and squats it unbearable to the point i have to stop and then the days following its terrible.

Would a lifting belt help to alleviate some of the pain during those lifts?

    thanks guys

    lift now, pay later

not sure why you would want to continue damaging your discs, with or without the belt.

Why would you not modify your routine and develop a disc friendly program? Squats and deads are murder on discs.

well, i took a month off from deads and squats but i had to go back to deads..its a love-hate relationship...i usually dont go heavy...mainly because if i go above 185 i cant stand up straight after a set because my back is so tight

Amen to that. Still i have found an article on the internet that actually say VERY LIGHT SQUATTING are good to rehydrate the discs.

    Going for 15-20 reps

It can take months for bulging disks to heal. Trust me, you dont want to push/rush it or you will end up like me. I did like you, endured the pain instead of letting it heal properly and searching the proper treatment until I could only walk 5-10 minutes at a time and needed surgery. L3 & L4

what did you do? and is it better now?

the thing is, i've had them for probably close to two years now. I went to see my ortho and she gave me an epidural and that really did nothing and now she tells me to take aleve...which is worthless lol

I've been having back pains for almost 10 years... suspected alignment or disc issues.... good news it was only arthritis, if you want to call it good news. So just pain. So after my doc announced after Xrays only arthritis, I relaunched squats, then my friggin left knee went out.... 4 months of rehab later, I'm saying hell with it.... I'm sticking to leg presses

    Goddam tired of rehab

bodyweight squats can do wonders, i will never ever squat heavy again, but light squatting seems to work just fine for me, of course leg pressing is best for me too when i go heavy

As I said, I lived with it for 20+ years until it got unbearable and I could only walk 5-10 minutes at a time. Same with standing. I had surgery 2005 on L3 & L4. It cured it 98% until I ruptured L5/S1 due to mostly being out of shape and over stressing the lower back. They also say once you have surgery on any disk you are 50% more likely to rupture the adjoining one directly above or below.

L5 was the worst and crippling more or less. I could not walk, stand or sit for more than 30 seconds without passing out due to pain even with 2 750 mg Vicodine, 1 Valium and 1 morphine at the same time several times a day. Nothing helped until I had surgery 2 weeks after teh rupture. I was numb from the waist down except I could feel pain. My legs shank down to nothing for the first time in my life and I had no calfs left... cry...

It took a year+ to get my legs back to normal? I still have numbness in my feet as well as they hurt if I walk much but I ignore it mostly as long as I can and I still have some numbness in other areas but it feels a million times better than it did before the surgery.
