Thread: What is the best source of carbs PWO?

What is the best source of carbs PWO?

A little help would be beneficial in this aspect.

a)Dextrose- This is highly regarded as an ideal PWO source of carbs, but it comes from corn, and I wonder, why such source is good. Isn't corn a bad carb source? I've read that many people are intolerant to corn, can develop allergies because of it, and can even slow down your metabolism....

    b)Maltodextrin- Corn sugar again....

c)Waxy Maize Starch- Is it better than Dextrose or Maltodextrin? Or is it all hype?

d)High Fructose Corn Syrup- I've read only negative things about this stuff, but would like to know what's the difference between this and Dextrose/Maltodextrin, since all of them come from corn.

e)Fructose- Would it be ok to drink something like 100% Grape Juice for PWO? If not, why?

I know there are a couple of questions here, but any help will be greatly appreciated, since I'm pretty confused in this topic.

I am no expert on supplements but I think I can help... a),b), and c) is used during your work out mainly. It is so your glycogen level is not depleted. IMO I think its all the same, I drink waximaize during my workout with BCAA and like to think it helps. Some may argue dextrose is better or maltodextrinm, it is the same argument for whey is better than casein and vise versa. I am sure based on the topic its been argued upon on this forum and others.

D). You want to avoid, I know that a,b, and c are all modified from its original source. ex: waximaize is a modified corn starch.

E). Is a poor choice as well its all sugar, mind as well drink Gatorade if your going to consume grape juice.

Above may be false, some may agree, some may disagree. But for PWO carbs I would keep it simple like oats.

Hoped this helped, and hopefully someone more knowledgeable can help or chime in.

Fructose is a poor choice b/c it must be processed by the liver in order to be converted to glycogen and this takes too much time.

Dextrose, Maltodextrin, and HFCA, all create a huge insulin spike which IMHO is unnecessary.

Many swear by waxy maize but I've never tried it. I like complex carbs - 100% whole oats for me.

Its 75g whole oats and 2 Scoops ON Whey PWO.
Even any GOOD complex carb and protein source. Although whey is absorbed alot quicker thus better for PWO.

This is just my opinion, but none of the above. The slight benefit of spiking insulin with consuming simple carbs does not outweigh the negatives. Stable blood glucose levels is more beneficial. I am a big fan of oats PWO.

Fructose would be the worst choice as it does very little in terms of restoring muscle glycogen.

    Thanks for the reply guys.

It's the first time I read oats would be the best option, though.

    It depends on your goals

Gaining weight i take waxi PWO

Now im cutting I use oats

Dont think that taking in simple carbs is going to replenish glycogen stores any faster. In the long term (24hrs) it will make little difference

The reason i take WMS pwo when gaining is simple. It clears my system within 15 mins and i can eat a big meal within the hr. Different story with oats for me
