Thread: Terrible pain in head when lifting today . . .

Terrible pain in head when lifting today . . .

I was bench pressing today. First set after warm ups, 255 x 9. No issues. Second set, when I got to the fourth rep, I felt a pain in my head, left side, around the temple to the ear, it grew worse during the fifth rep and was extreme by rep six, so I racked the weight. It was extreme at this point, but it seemed to go away after about 5 minutes, so I moved on to incline press - the pain came roaring back during a warm up set, so I stopped the workout.

Tonight, I have felt great all day, so I thought I would give it another go. I started with incline press, and no issues during a couple of warm up sets. Then when I put some weight on (185), my head started pounding again in the same place on the ninth rep and by ten it was extreme again.

To tell the truth it was a little scary. I decided to call it a night.

The same spot is still a little painful, but subsiding.

I do have stuffy sinuses right now, but nothing major, and no pain at all except as described above.

Has anybody else had this happen to them?

Nobody? I feel great, and I want to lift today (catch up on the arms I did not do yesterday and do my regularly scheduled legs), but to be honest this has me a little frightened. I have never had anything like this happen before, and if it was my sinuses or something, why did it not happen on the first set?

Do a search on google. I had a similar thing happen a couple times while pushing on leg press, except it was on the back left, lower part of my head. Just dont push to hard for a week or two and it should go away if its like what i had.

I took today off. Maybe I will rest for a few days. It just sucks when I fell like my workouts are taking off. You know how things plateau, or gains are slow, most of the time, and then one day you walk up to the weights and a heavier weight feels lighter, and you feel great while working out and can really notice the difference for a couple of weeks? It comes in spurts for me, and this was one of those spurts, so this is really bad timing.

OK, that freaked me out. No more searches on google about aneurysms and tumors . . .

Sounds like the headaches I get during sex sometimes. My understanding is that as long as your brain isn't bleeding (aneurysm, etc.) it is nothing to worry about.

Are you drinking plenty of water? I used to get this too but then I started carrying a water bottle with me during my workouts instead of relying on the fountain and it cleared right up.

Hmmm . . . My ex-wife used to get headaches before sex (or instead of).

Tigershark, I am taking a few days off of lifting, just to be safe, and also to make sure this sinus thing is cleared up, and, when I start again, I will follow your suggestion about water. I probably do not drink enough.

i have the exact same thing except the pain is there all the time and has been for 2wks now, im controlling it with otc sinus meds, i originally thought it was migraine relate but my migraine meds didnt do much. it comes on bad when i strain, cough and sneezing, taking a dump etc. ive had a touch of a head cold over the past w'end and hoping its connected. the fact tht strain makes it worse leads me to believe its blood vessel related or a poss muscle strain. giving it one more week then its of to the docs.

I am going to try OTC sinus meds today. I noticed when I woke up this morning a lot of sinus pressure on the left side, and when I did some low intensity pull ups this morning, I felt it there, but not with intense pain.

I guess it is just a sinus issue and not my head wanting to explode!

Bought phenylephrine HCI 10 mg tablets and bottles of water. We'll see how it goes.

    Problem solved!

Must have been pressure on the left sinus.

If you search my threads I started there is a name for this, it is when oxygen gets shut off from the brain and you hold your breath under extreme stress.

Massive head rush that is very scary. Unbelievable pain.

And nothing is going to cure it/ help out except you remembering to breathe while lifting, it is that simple.
