I need help with my snoring

My snoring has slowly put a huge damper on my marriage and I need some advice. For the last few months I have been able to get my weight up from 184 in September 2010, to 212lbs as of yesterday and Iam really stoked! My BF is 13.5% but seems like as soon as I got over 200lbs my snoring has become pretty bad so my wife says. I am an open mouth sleeper so my snoring is happening in the back of my throat, not so much the nose. I had a sleeping test done a few years back and went and saw a specialist. When I was little I broke my nose shooting a 30-06 rifle, but the Dr said that my nasal passage is NOT obstructed in any way. I try to breath through my nose when falling asleep, but it seems that my mouth slowly opens after I fall asleep and that's when the snoring begins. My wife leaves the bedroom almost every night and she is fed up with it....I honestly can't blame her. I do not drink or smoke, but I do drink a protein shake with oats/peanut butter and milk right before bed and I hear that can be a no no. I need some help and I hope I do not have to start loosing weight....Iam 6'3" and all my recent weight gain has been lean and Iam really excited about that....no gear involved, all natty
Help a brother out if you can!

short of surgery, you have a decision to make. If your snoring goes away under 200lbs, then you need to decide if your wife or your weight is more important.

My dad has a (I think it's called) positive flow breathing aspirator. Hooks up to your nose/mouth and pumps in air so you are not pulling in the air, and then snoring. Expensive, bulky, uncomfortable (but you get used to it)

    Other than that, surgery.

I snore, but fortunately only when I drink or get real fat. Easy solution for me.

Give your poor wife a break and lose the weight for now until you figure out another solution. Either that, or go sleep on the couch. Aint fair to her that you snore

the machines are actually called CPAP breathing machines, and doctors prescribe them for sleep apnea, but it also eliminates snoring

T Roman, you are absolutley right...I have a decision to make and its an easy one....my wife will always win and she has to be in my life! The truth hurts and I guess I was looking for a way to stop snoring, AND continue gaining weight. I have looked into those face mask things....but I always told myself "Iam too young to be wearing crap like that" But if it helps...might have to consider. The breath right strips don't help much cause I snore when I open my mouth, and then I don't really breath much through my nose anymore....so I've been told. I really appreciate your responses brother
    Take care!

Lmao. I'm going through the same thing right now. Breath rights don't do shit but rip theskin off my nose. My wife is at her breaking point. Im thinking of trying to mouth piece that changes the angle of your jaw to open the air passage. Keep me informed if you come up with something.

The following tips will hopefully teach you how to stop snoring. It's important to remember that different remedies will have varying success depending on the individual.
Elevate your head by sleeping on a thicker pillow or multiple pillows will help reduce your snoring.

Don't drink alcoholic beverages, take sleeping pills, tranquilizers, or antihistamines right before going to sleep, they will cause your muscles to relax and limit your air passage way.

Avoid dairy products, which can cause mucus build-up right before you go to sleep.

If you are overweight, losing some weight will reduce snoring by increasing the space in your air passage way.

Sleeping on your side instead of your back will help to prevent snoring.

A common remedy to prevent sleeping on your back is to sew a tennis ball to the back of your shirt; the discomfort of sleeping on the ball will prevent you from staying on your back.

Try following a regular sleep routine.

Try taking in a little bit of honey before sleeping.

Don't eat a big meal right before bed, if your stomach is full it will push up on your diaphragm and limit breathing passage ways.

Avoid eating "rich" foods such as cakes, cookies, chocolate and pizza.

Sleep on a firmer pillow, a pillow that's too soft encourages your throat muscles to relax and narrows your air passageway.

Inhale steam before sleeping or sleep in a room with a humidifier turned on, which will reduce congestion and moisturize the throat.

Purchase some nasal strips and put them on before going to sleep. Nasal strips will open up your nostrils and allow more air to come in, thus reduce snoring.

If you are a smoker, stop smoking, if that is not feasible then avoid smoking right before you go to bed. Smoking causes inflammation and swelling of the throat.

Take anti-snoring pills or use anti-snoring nasal spray.

Consult a medical profesional if your snoring continues to adversely affect your sleep.

I have seen that contraption and in theory it sounds like it COULD work....cause like I said, I have this weird throat snore going on lol hence why breath strips don't work. I'll keep you informed brother.....and yea, my wife is about to OFF me in my sleep

Thanks for the tips DSM...I usually have milk with my bedtime shake....I'll switch to water tonight. The tennis ball idea is incredible haha. Humidifier could be promising. My wife likes to sleep with the fan on for some background noise so she doesn't hear me as much, BUT that dries my throat out even more....maybe we will switch to the radio playing lightly or something along those lines...I really appreciate the help guys. I just feel really guilty. My wife works her tail off at work as do I...it's not fair for her to have to leave the bedroom in the middle of the night and Iam devoted to find a solution to this so my beautiful wife can get the rest she needs/deserves. AGAIN>>>>THANKS TO ALL

My problem is I can't sleep on my side because it kills my shoulders, the pain gets unbearable. The bigger pillow I'm going to try, I thought about the same thing last night. I woke up the other morning and my wife was about to break down and cry. Now I'm up all night making sure I don't snore.

I had a major snoring problem. Had the deviated septum surgery and it did nothing. When I cut and lost 8 pounds snoring was gone. I also switched from glasses to contacts and this made a big differencr as well.

one last suggestion for you to consider. Ear plugs! they are comfortable, they cut down the noise like 90%, and you can buy a couple hundred of them for about $15 at home depot. You can reuse them for several nights no problem.

    see if this helps.

Ear plugs for your wife. Mine uses them. My contribution is that I allow her the opportunity to fall asleep before I do. I've had surgery with no effect.

I've got the same problem..... I get woken up with a shove to my body 8-9 times a night. I try to lay on my side but I can't stay like that..... hands go numb.

If i'm below 240lbs I don't snore..... but if i'm so much as 1lb over 240..... i wake up with a sore throat lol

The big pillow helped me sleep on my sides. Much easier on the shoulders and no hand numbness.

I wondered about the jaw repositioning deal myself, of course it also seem like it might be likely to cause TMJ or some other kind of pain. It seems like if they made something that simply held your mouth open and inch that would help of course I guess you might drool quite a bit.

There is a pillow that you can get that has a middle section that is not as full as the perimeter of the pillow. My roommate is a chiropractor and he sells them at his clinic. They are for correct spine alignment, but they also tilt your head back further thereby un-obstructing your airways and leaving your uvula in a position where it will not contact your throat to create the snoring sound. The other last ditch option is a newer surgery practice where they place a plastic piece not very long inside your uvula to stiffen it up so it does not become like a "wind sock" and flap around when you breath. This is what causes the snoring sound. The surgery can be done in less than 30 min I believe and it is done under local anesthetic. I will try and remember to ask him on Sunday when he is around and get back to you.

You might also try a one of those round pillows, like a buckwheat pillow. It tilts your head back because it goes under your neck and cradles it.

I would try the nose thing first.

I also had the nasal surgery. It helped with breathing but not snoring.

I also had the uvula cut. DAMN that hurt like sh*t and helped but didnt cure it.
