Building/strengthening forearms - those 'grip' devices

Sorry i'm posting this in the diet section, but the workout section hardly sees any traffic, and the lounge lizards will hijack the thread in 2 seconds if I post it there.

Maybe this is a ridiculous question to ask on a bodybuilding board, but what do you think of those 'tension grips' for forearm strengthening and building? You know, the ones that have a pair of handles that you squeeze together.

You don't need to go into how deadlifts etc. will work forearms; i'm well aware of that. I'm not looking for a workout with these, but simply something to do while i'm sitting at my desk at work all day.

    Let me know your thoughts.

I prefer the old 1" wooden dowl rod with a whole drilled in it, with a rope ran through it and the other end attatched to a plate at the bottom and to roll it up. If you want an awesome forearm workout try that along with spiders. Spiders kill my forearms.

Thats what i was refering too. I can't find one of spiders but what it basically is

Start with a barbell in the starting position as if you were going to do a close grip bb row, Then flip your grip with one hand so you have an overhand grip, then flip the other till you have both hands in an overhand grip. Then one at a time flip them back to the original underhand grip. You don't need much weight and it has to be done very quick.

I know what scooty is on about...

Get a piece of wood 1 foot long (round dowel type wood about 1 inch thick)

You need to attatch a rope to is so that if you hold the wood with 2 hands in front of you and twist the wood the rope wraps around the wood..

You now attach a weight to the end of the rope...

Holding the woodend pole at shoulder height in front of you, twist and twist the wood ( thus raising the weight) until the weight is all the way at the top...

Then do the same in reverse to lower the weight...

    U get me?

LoL I do, but I might look like an idiot doing either of this while sitting at my desk at work, lmao! That's why I was asking about these grip devices - they're low profile and quiet, I can sit here and squeeze away without disturbing anybody.

Damn i wish this was a lounge thread, I'd love to see how many off color coments would be made about ways to work your forearms lol.

Grips are good to go man. Get two sets with different resistances

Yes you would look like a dick

I think that the flexsion and extension of the wrist is more effective than the flexsion of the grip..

If u know what I mean

Gbrice ive been using this for years. I lietrally drive those around me crazy if they arent used to it. Ill go to failure then flip the grip the other way in my hand and go to failure. Then switch hands and repeat. I do it constantly - when i drive , when im sitting around , during the day at work if i can , watching tv. I have like 4 of them laying around at all times *LOL* Ive never brought it up because i thought people would think i was nuts! Its great for relieveing stress and has def helped with grip strength over the years. I go through 2 pair a year becvause they do get easier to grip with use.

Thanks man, this is what I was looking for. Aside from grip strength, have you noticed any actual forearm hypertrophy as a result? Vascularity?

I think this is a better choice and less likely to cause you hand/tendonitis.carpel tunnel issues. http://www.ehow.com/way_5608463_sque...exercises.html

i love grippers, i bought 3 heavy duty ones off of e-bay because the normal ones are just pathetic, never build any strength with them! i bought them because my grip wasnt making progress 2 keep up with my lifts. especially deadlifts, lat pulldowns and any rowing movement suffered. saw good strength in my grip in about 2 weeks. their not very expensive and their effective.

i got the 150-200-250 ibs. couldnt even close the 250ibs when i started, get about 8 reps with it now. 150ibs is good 4 sitting at ur desk when ur bored like u said :P can go 30 reps+ with it.

My question still remains - any hypertrophy in the forearms as a result? Vacularity?

as jimmy said they are pretty cool but they do ware and become easier to squeeze. i went through a phase of about a month of using them. but i found 30 years of whacking off work much better...lol hijack

This is very true!! Thats why i said it annoys the hell out of those not used to it! As far as hyperatrophy - hard to say since ive done it for a long time and have lifted a long time. Which is doing it????
Vascularity - well i suppose yes after doing a few "sets" if you can call them that im def vascular in forearms even up into bicep....which lasts as i tend to do it out of habit more often than not....

i have always had rediculously vascular arms...always get comments about it! my forearm and hand veins r freaky, look like their about 2 explode when i workout!

noticed a bit of growth, forearms are stubborn muscle 2 grow like calves. could be down 2 working them through workouts aswell but i deffinately noticed strength increase. i deadlift 140kg for 6 reps, 4 sets now without my grip failing. i culdnt manage 100kg for more then 3 reps without reseting before. deffinately worth it imo.

From what I've seen of their use (always needed to get some but never gotten round to it):

    Major Pro's
    + Increase grip
    + Increase crushing strength
+ Tone tone tone (some vascularity)
    + Stress Relief
    + Hobby

    Negatives
    - Squeaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaak
    - Creaaaaaaach

In other words apart from sound they're a quick easy little hobby that will supplement your gym workout. I still need to get some, my gripping power is weaaak.

Aye those are the ones I've seen, and kept hovering over the add to cart button everytime :P

Lowest price I've seen is eBay, 3 for about £30. Would go for 200/250/300 I think.
