12 hr shift on the road - What to do ?

The good news is I got accepted for an internship with a Vet this summer and will be able to work with him Thursdays. He deals with large animals so basically we service farm to farm in the north half of my province. Unfortunately, these shifts will start at 7 in the morning and go until 6 or 7 at night. We will be in the Farm Van during this time and we only stop for washroom breaks and probably pick up lunch on the go. What am I suppose to do every Thursday for the rest of the summer ? I Talked to him and I could bring a lunch bag with food but I think meat is out of the question. What would you do in a situation like this?

Why is meat out of the question? I'm not in the exact same boat as you, but I too don't get much time to eat while at work. What I do: pack some chicken breast in a tupperware container, and eat it with oats.....I premeasure the oats and put them into an empty water bottle every night. When it's time to eat, I add water to the oats already in the bottle and drink them down. As you can see, I eat for results, not for taste lol!! If you can stomach it, it gets the job done!!! And only takes about 2 minutes to scarf down a whole meal!

i just go chicken breat + brown rice for lunches during the day with some vege's and fruit. it isnt gonna go off in 1 day. u culd bring a small cooler bag if u like and just make up each meal in a tupperware box.

I do this as well. Pick up some of those small ice packs to freeze and place in the cooler just in case too!

Sorry I should of specified, I have like a small tiny lunch bag - think brown paper bag from high school - and our truck has no microwave or fridge of course . I could try the oats business with water and see if it goes well. There would be no room in our truck for the cooler unfortunately. Would protein bars be feasible in this sort of emergency situation (1 or two). I figure if I can get 1 meal in before my shift and two meals plus two protein bars in during the shift it might be okay.

I'm going completely against the grain here. Make it a fast day!!!! Since it's only 1 day a week, take the opportunity to fast - the next day you're body will be primed for nutrient uptake. You can also consider a liquid only day (shakes, etc). When it comes down to a matter of convenience, don't sweat small stuff like this. If you don't eat for 12 hours, it's not the end of the world. Eat a huge meal before you leave in the morning and you will not have to worry about catabolism. You do not need to worry about slowing your metabolism... that doesn't happen over the course of a day.

Bro you need to prepare meals a head of time...shit i wont get to a 2 hour movie in the theater without two chicken breast some almonds and a banana in tub-aware. as mentioned above rice cakes and almond butter with a shake...you can get very creative.

I do prepare meals ahead of time. Sundays I typically cook for the entire week ahead. My problem is I have literally no space in this truck besides a brown paper bag and a 2L bottle of water. We'd be stopping for food but basically what I'm aware of is my options are: Tim Hortons (Dunkin Donuts for you Americans), Subway, or like Harvey's.

Yeah I am still cutting Gbrice, I should either update or make a new log that I can actively post in, or just transfer my physical log in my notebook onto my thread. Hopefully gonna post some new pics too, thinking I'm close to the 19% BF mark, which would make me down quite a bit from when I first started.

Going to try fasting and see how it goes. So huge meal before, fast for 12 hours, then huge meal after?

I guess I don't really understand the big dilemma. Is the truck really so small that you can't fit a 1 cubic ft cooler bag in the floorboard?

I'm in a similar situation 5 - 6 days a week and I put my prepared meals in a cooler bag with "ice-brix". They keep everything cold throughout the course of the day and I fit 5 full meals in my cooler bag everyday. 3 of my meals are currently 8oz of chicken breast chopped up with 1 cup of basmati rice that I put mixed together in tuperware containers and the other 2 meals are 8oz of flank steak and 1 1/2 cups broccoli that I put in separate ziploc bags. I usually try to take it out of the cooler bag about an hour before eating so I can eat it at room temp instead of cold and I pack some plastic forks for the chicken/rice and just eat the steak and broccoli with my hands like a caveman lol.

If you're one of those people who has to have a hot cooked meal then you just have to get over it. Eat what your body needs, not what you enjoy.

I'm a part time bus driver and can end up on the roads for 8-10 hour shifts. I pack a lunch. I do chicken wraps, tuna wraps, peanuts, occasional atkins bar (good protein, low carb). There are lot of ways to go about it, just have an open mind and dont be afraid to try new things. Good luck to you.
