My folks farm was hit in 2004 in southwest missouri over by truman lake area. Over 200 thou damage back then. It took years of fighting with the insurance company so I can imagine what these poor folks are going through and that is before they fight with the insurance.

If that preacher that predicted the end of the world the other day had of lived in Joplin when this hit, he probably would have thought it was the end of the world....

Lets face it if a tornado is coming at you 3/4 miles wide and 200 miles per hour you don't stand a chance. And that's what hit them. yeah if the alarms go off I'm grabbing my gear...and pins and heading to the basement. If I'm going out I'm going out geared up. lol

What is the usual material used in making houses in the US ? Because i see alot of them banged up like carboard boxes. Seems alot of wood is used in constructing them.

In my conception if you build a house with a hard foundation and medium thick wall of concrete, i dont see how a tornado would level it. Especially if you use reinforced(with metal) concrete. Pay top dollar but when the tornado comes you know you wont be picking your belongings from the neighbour down the road. Board up the windows, take a shot of suspension, flex you anus sfincter and hold on.

That's not a practical or cost effective way to build. They are built on concrete foundations and high quality wood. The force of some of these storms would tear through many concrete structures aswell.

Yeah that tornado was an E5 with winds of over 200 miles per hour. Not much can survive above ground. Most of the people who died were hiding in the right places for a normal size tornado to survive through without basements, like in their bathtubs with mattresses covering them, or the center of their homes, it's just that the winds were so extreme it wiped them right off their foundations. It even sucked a teen right out of his closed sunroof in his Hummer H3 and snapped him right out of his seatbelt. The kid has never been found. He was on his way home with his dad from graduation and drove right into the twister. There are still around 1500 people unaccounted for.

Why would you drive intro a twister ? I mean they are pretty big so its hard not to notice them, shouldve turned the otherway around and gas'em up.

Man I feel bad for all who have lost someone due to these storms but I bet that was a wild ass last ride being sucked through your sunroof and thrown god knows where. RIP

Man... here we go again. Well I should have known that since The President and all the news media are in Joplin Today that those village idiots from Westboro Baptist Church would rear their ugly faces and sure enough they are down there lining the streets protesting telling everyone down there how this is all the Joplin folks fault for the deaths and destruction, as it was caused by, are you ready for this, yep those pesky homosexuals. If that were indeed true I would have sent that F-5 Twister right through The Westboro Church in Topeka Kansas with them idiots all inside. I feel sorry for those folks down there in Joplin, picking up the pieces of their lives only to have these fools protesting in front of them. Fortunately there is a Veterans Motorcycle gang down there lining the streets to block out all their hate and signs. should be an interesting evening news cast.

In a related story from above about the 16 year boy who was driving his Hummer H3 with his dad, home from graduation ceremonies when it hit them and sucked him out the closed sunroof, seat belt and all, his body was finally found miles away in pond that they have just drained. They are draining all the ponds for miles looking for other possible dead ones in them.
