Thumbs up do you need protein powders if you can get all the protein you need from foods

basically if you can afford to get your protein from fish, chicken, beef etc do you really need protein shakes ?? like i know they say streight after training its good but is a tin of tuna just as good if not better ? anyone think that you dont need supplements if you can get what you need from whole foods ?
    cheers

The only time I would say you "NEED" protein powder is whey when you finish lifting because of how fast it's easily absorbed in the bloodstream. Rest should be whole foods.

If you can meet all of your Protein requirements with foods then you obviously do not need to "Supplement".

I'm with Windex right after training is the most crucial time for protein (whey). In my case, post workout is the only time I use protein powder.

Agreed. If you can handle egg whites PWO, go for it. Not as fast as whey but still relatively fast. And before anybody jumps down my throat about the 'anabolic window' magically closing after an hour or so, save it. I have plenty of research I can cite that disproves this bogus belief propagated and pushed on us by supplement companies.

I was wondering about this and have been meaning to ask. What is the window of time after a workout to take the shake?

There is research that shows protein uptake actually increases several hours PWO. That being the case, there is nothing wrong with taking the shake immediately PWO - you're simply getting the processes moving right away. However, the PPWO meal is the real key here.

I just want to drive the point home that missing that shake immediately PWO is not robbing your body of anything. Skipping or having an inadequate PPWO meal is.

To answer your question - there is no window. As long as you're following a fairly standard 3 hour eating interval, there should be no reason to worry.

The length of the "window" depends entirely on what caused this window. For example if you did high intensity running and somehow got very little muscle fatigue (I mean very little) then the window would be as long as it takes to increase glycogen stores and put your body back into homeostasis. Now if you did an intense weight training session then the window would peak after training and "close" when you have no muscle to repair and you have gained the proper amount of muscle mass/lost the proper amount of fat so that your body adapted to the stressors placed on it - once again, homeostasis.

Window = your body needing nutrients and the increased uptake ability to absorb said nutrients as a result of a stressor.

how does one determine this "timing?" feeling low in energy or what?

Sorry, PPWO = POST post workout! i.e. your real/first whole food meal after your workout and PWO shake.

Base and I do the same thing - eat a very substantial meal (beef and potatoes) for PPWO.

^^ thanks...so how long after the shake should this ppwo be? what is that window of time?
ex: let's say i go to the gym and workout and then dash back home for my shake which would be 20-30 minutes later. Then how long after that is the PPWO meal?

There is no huge rush IMO, but generally people eat the PPWO meal within an hour or so of finishing the shake. Again, if you're eating ever 2.5 - 3 hours as a general rule to begin with (and not counting the PWO shake as a meal), this should be a non-issue by default.

Not needed by any means, strictly a convenience issue.
