    Question about protein intake

I follow common wisdom as far as getting most of my proteins from actual food versus shakes but I was curious as to what makes protein from food better than protein from shakes. Im always giving advice to people to get most of their protein for food because that is what I've always been told but the other day someone asked me why and I had no real answer to give them. At least not an answer based on any actual research. Just curious if anyone has a good answer for this and can cite some sources. I would love to know the answer to this so I can back up what I'm saying in the future.

Im talking about just protein intake here, calories. thermic effect and everything else aside.... strictly protein A vs protein B.

I'm glad you said thermic effect and all of that aside, because that's the point I was going to make.

    Other than that - nothing.

The main reason whole foods are preached so much around here (although most don't even know WHY they preach it) is because alot of so called 'hard gainers' simply aren't eating enough in general, and we're trying to get them EATING, period. Whole food will help expand the stomach more over than than liquid obviously, allowing them to eat more.

    We'll see a diet like:

    8am - whey shake

11am - 2 slices of turkey on wheat bread, slice of cheese

2pm - preworkout - whey shake and an apple

4pm - PWO - whey shake and banana

    7pm - 6oz steak, veggies

    10pm - 1/2 cup cottage cheese, 2tbsp peanut butter

This person obviously doesn't know how to eat, and we're naturally going to tell him to eat more FOOD.

It also has to do with protein variety. Too many people supplement with straight whey, and don't get the benefits of eggs, beef, chicken, fish, etc. Using a protein blend helps alot.
