    Food Suggestions For Hiking

Been doing a lot of day hiking lately and was wondering if anyone had any ideas for food that would be good on the trail.

    Thanks for any suggestions!

You need convenient food that can be packed and eaten as is. I would go with beef jerky for my protein, either cheerios or wheetabix (again convenience) for your carbs, and maybe some nuts to slow nutrient absorption and make it last longer.

You can also make your own clean bars ahead of time. Oats, protein powder, splenda, water or almond milk, maybe some natty pb.... be creative!

Thanks. Jerkey has been the staple the last couple trips but it's so loaded with sodium. I drink a lot of water combined with the jerky I just blow up.

we are actually going to the health food store tonight to look for a lower sodium jerky.

I like the cheerio suggestion, we were thinking some sort of whole grain from the bins at the store ...... same type of deal.

we also have pb and celery with protein shakes.

Gonna buy some low fat high protein bars for tomorrow. For the future how do you make these smart bars you speak of? Sounds interesting.

I'd recommend against the bars you can buy... they're usually loaded with a ton of crap neither of us can pronounce. Make your own and you can control what goes in them.

Check out the recipe sub forum - you can also make the protein banana bread, or yam walnut muffins - both are great and u can find these recipes in the sub forum as well.

    Thanks, again...

I'll look into the making the bars.

I saw the recipes for bread and muffins just before I started this thread. My fiance' and I were excited to see those and saved the txt to our recipe folder.

Been eating the oat pancakes for the last 3 weekends thanks to one of the members pointing them out. They're great!

I'm off to hike up 2500 feet in 2.5 miles, in 90* heat... followed by a large plate of authentic calorie filled Italian food for my weekly cheat meal!

Make your own jerky.. Tastes sooo much better then store bought and you can control the nutrition.. Just slice up some lean steak and put it in a Dehydrator for 24 hrs.. You can get the Dehydrators for relatively cheap and they will save you loads in the long run if you eat a lot of jerky.. not to mention you can dehydrate fruits.... veggies.. just about anything and take it on the trail with you

I use a dehydrator as well. Its great because allot of the dehydrated fruit that you buy has added sugar.

I'd avoid putting splenda in your smart bars... Try agave nectar instead

Great info... we're going to look into the dehydrator. My parents had a large one when we were kids. That and making smart bars are my new tasks to accomplish..
