Hey guys,
I've been reading threads on this site on and off for the past month and spent the whole of yesterday and today on the forums too so I decided it was time to register and actually be apart of the community.
I'm located in Canada and am a competitive athlete in grappling(not mma, just grappling, getting punched in the head is really not my thing haha). I've been lifting on and off since I was 16 but have never really got a good grasp on it till about a year ago(am 28 now). I lift mainly to condition for grappling and my main goal is to get increases in strength although I'm not opposed to having a smoking hot body, so strength=priority 1, smoking hot body=priority 2.I'm finding it very difficult to juggle the two though, lifting and making gains while training 4 times a week for grappling with two hours each session is confusing and tough. If I work too hard in the gym I get clobbered in training and if I train too much my lifting goes out of whack and I don't make any gains.
Eating right isn't hard however, eating at the right time is, depending on when I have to train I have to keep food light otherwise I'd constantly feel like throwing up while grappling. Also I'm finding that an athlete's diet is a lot different from a bodybuilders, we have to take in a lot more calories and it's so expensive. I eat like a friggin horse and I still have trouble keeping and gaining weight. My fellow grapplers who are bigger then me don't eat nearly as much and they are all 20-40 lbs heavier then me. Must be a metabolism thing?
At the moment I'm halfway through my first run through of a periodized lifting program, I'm in the intensification/deloading phase. I'm still trying to understand how it works. Will need to read up more on it. Anyway I think this should suffice for an intro, say hi and comment as you will! It's good to be here!
