    Devastated

    So here goes.
Today, my Great Dane, Finlay was put to sleep at the age of 7.
I'm truly devastated and manning up isn't possible either. What is it with dogs? They're only dogs, right? When the vet told me he had growths all on his spine and he was in that much pain, I felt terrible. Responsible for letting him go through the pain without recognising there was anything wrong!!! My stomach is upside down and yeah I've shed more than a few tears that's for sure. He was such a fantastic natured dog, my mate and he never answered back. Always listened and always there. I feel totally lost already.
Can't really explain why I'm posting this really? Easier not to talk to anybody face to face I guess and I need to tell someone!!!

there is something about my nature that doesn't get that bond some people can have with their pets, like parents have with their children. don't get me wrong, i have pets and love them. But i'm usually the one that has to take the pet to the vet to get put down. sure it bothers me momentarily, but i don't dwell on it.... i just move on.

sorry mate, not trying to be insensitive, I just don't have anything in my experience that I can relate to what you just said. If I lost a child, then I'd feel all broken up inside as you describe.

and i'm not trying to belittle your loss. let's just say it's a blind spot for me and I don't get it.

but your loss is real, and I'm sorry bro'. 7 years seems still pretty young for a dog. My dog "jodie" is a female chocolate lab that will be 10 this year. I suspect in a couple of years, I'll have to make another trip to the vet. =(

That sucks, bro. I've never had to go through that. My dog is fairly young (4) so I know it'll be a while before I have to take that trip, but I'm sure when that day does arrive that it's going to rip me up inside. I'm usually not too emotional, some kind of defense mechanism I developed when I was younger, but I don't think I'd be able to help it in that situation.

You should think about getting another dog. Everyone I know that has gone through this says it helps quite a bit.

I've always had dogs and like you say, I've always gone out and got another relatively quickly. I'll probably put it on hold for the time being. Personal life is a shambles at the minute so I might use the time to see if I can sort that part of my life out. Thanks mate

Go and get a new puppy mate. I lost my dog this year and went straight out and got another one. Its not that I have forgotten my dog that isnt alive anymore, it helped a lot, but he wasnt well at all when he was put down. Had a large growth on him and had it removed but the days following he wasnt himself, so he caught the bus (CTB).

Its said at the time, but you will be fine.

I am so sorry to hear you lost your best friend. It is horrible to go thru. I just got yet another dog the other day since they give us so much love. I have to have them around me. They fill your heart up with love. That is why you are heart broken. Take a few days to recover then find yourself another buddy~
Life is too short, so kiss slowly, laugh insanely, love truly and forgive quickly.

Thanks mate. It's been good to talk about it and share the experience I guess. I've already got a breeder lined up who has a great rep, so I'm gonna speak to her and see when she plans to breed again. (the dog, not the breeder) lol

I've thought about a harlequin, but always loved the fawn. (I was a big Scooby Doo fan)! Maybe next time?

Sorry to hear... Being an animal lover, it hurts me to hear when anyone looses an animal companion of theirs. Until someone creates a bond with a member of another species, you never really appreciate just how special they all are.

that does help a bit, i knew it was the kind thing to do for kes a while back, she had bad arthritis. talking about it on here helped me alot.

i had a stunning unusually large specimen of a male dal afew years back, he was between a standard dal and a great dane in size. someone ripped the wire off my gate in an attempt to steal him (happens alot with desirable pedigrees in n.ireland) but they didnt bank on him being as vicious as he was and im guessing they bricked it and ran. he got out, i found him dead on the road afew miles away after being hit by a car. took me a good 6mths to get over that, i literally would have killed those responsible if i'd of ever caught up with them. the shock of suddenly losing a pet like that was terrible, on par with, if not worse than losing a person

Loosing a dog is just like loosing a woman/lover. The best way to get over it is to get back on another one; so to speak

Sorry for your loss. I have a dog I could give you, pekineses. OK it's not a real dog but I'm trying to find a home for it. It was my moms dog but she passed away last week so the dog needs a new home.
