Just wondering I've been told you should have a protein shake 3 times a day. One after your work out n then the other 2 after a meal. I'm trying to bulk up. My meals are good plenty of carbs and protein. Does anyone have a shake pre workout?

you should try to get all your nutrition via solid meals. shakes tofill in the blanks.
I start a shake about 5 minutes prior to workout, continuing to sip on it while working out, and another right after workout. But it isn't a random mix of protein and other ingredients. Specific goal to what I'm trying to do.
So you reckon if your diets in order 1 around workout time is enough
yes. hard to tell though. have you posted yours in the nutrition center yet?
and you willl still need to eat every 2 to 3 hours
%50? that's interesting! I've always heard you benefit more from food than shakes, I'd love it if that was the case I'm well n truly over cooking all the time for myself. Anyone else's thoughts on this?
I've always heard... and preached... the same thing. When I got involved with my mentor, I wrote up my diet and gave it to him for his review. I asked if he thought I had too many shakes. He replied "there's no such thing.... have the shakes".
At the time, his advice seemed cavalier. But, I listen to people I trust and respect. If you look at my pics from before I worked with him and after, I think they'll speak for themselves.
Seems there's alot of broscience out there that we accept without question, because it's what 'most people' say and do.
Best thing you can do is trial and error on yourself. That's what I did, and I'm not suffering from it.![]()
Cheers gbrice. Could you throw a rough idea at me of how many you have a day n when n is it always after you've finished a meal? Thanks mate I appreciate it
I'll give you the most extreme example - i.e. a day where I rely on protein powder the most, for whatever reason (time crunch, etc)
4:30am meal (preworkout) - Protein smoothie (blended oats, protein powder, cottage cheese, etc)
7:30am - PWO shake
10am - real food meal
1pm - real food meal
4pm - real food meal
7pm - protein smoothie (same as meal 1)
10pm (bedtime) - lumpy protein pudding - protein powder mixed into cottage cheese with a tsp of natty PB
So 4 out of 7 meals, over 50% - are protein 'shakes' (sort of). Yes, 3 of the 4 contain cottage cheese so it's not JUST protein powder, but close enough.
Hope this helps.
It does, I'd much rather have a protein shake than cook up a meal sometimes so I'll run a trial on something similar to what your doing. Looking at all the helpful advice you've passed out to people you must have good character, thanks a million
Got to say they should still be looked upon as a supplement not a replacement. 3 of gb's 4 meals use powder as supplements to the meals themselves. I for one supplement my breakfast and final meal with powders and, including my PWO shake powders account for 29% of my daily protein.
The issue for me is when people assume that their inbetween meals (!?) should be just 30g of whey because the supplement companies say so!
Occasionally if I am struggling to get a real food meal in for whatever reason I may have a shake but I'll always add my own carbs to the mix, it will end up being the same macro's as the meal I should be having anyway.
I'm a firm believer that one shake is enough. There is something to be appreciated in the bodys' ability to break down food and pull the nutrients from the food. I believe that shakes are over-rated, obviously some protein is better than none even if it is from a shake. Final word, Phil Heath cut shakes 10 weeks out from the olympia and it didnt hurt him.
IMO Everyone is different.. What may work for one athlete might not work for another....
hsvcraig.. you have been given sound advice.. experiment with your own body and see how it works?
Keep us all posted.
personally, i get a good chunk of my protein from shakes. but, I'm also busy as hell and not near food (or at least healthy food) alot.
so I eat two meals a day and get the rest from protein shakes. maybe not the best diet, but it's what i got right now.
it depends on you and your needs. if you are like me and busy alot, then a shake is the perfect answer. and man,
if you drink it with water, you have just ingested a ton of great protein with NO excess calories. that's hard to find in nature.
40 or 50 grams of protein without a single carb or fat? seriously, you cant beat that.....
so make it work for you man.
and don't be scared, as G said, because it's not hurting anything to get a good chunk from shakes. its a healthy way to get in
what you need. you dont want to start substituting when you get hungry with McD's or something. Ruin everything you
work for.
but if you are high protein, i would just say to keep up with your fiber. i don't know about long term high protein intake,
but i would err on the safe side. helps keep ya cleaned out.
Stem brought up a good distinction worth noting - that really only one of my powder meals is powder only - pwo. While cottage cheese isn't the most substantial protein source available, it's something, and adds casein to the mix. As stated, I also add my own carbs.
Agreed 100% with the issue being straight whey shakes being used as meal repla***ent.
