i heard dips expand ribcage? does this have any effect on the sternum?

nothing alters bone structure. you are most likely experiencing pain from connective tissue. if this becomes a sharp pain, be very wary, you dont want a tear
its all cartiledge between the pecs in ur sternum
For the life of me I can't remember what the medical term for this is called but it is where you actually strain the cartilage that conects the ribs to the sternum. I was diagnosed with this in the winter of 2009/10. I believe it was caused by excessively heavy weighted dips. I used to go as heavy as 3 plates on a dip belt. Any who I started to get really sore after my chest workouts and kept powering through it and it eventually go to the point where I couldn't flat bench 135 without being extremely uncomfortable. I went to the doctor and was diagnosed with this. He said its really common with our colleges rowing team and I was prescribed some anti-inflammatories and was told to take some time off then ease back in to it with very minimal weight and about a third of the full range of motion. After about 3 monthes I was finally back to putting my normal weight up. My advice definately take it easy on the dips. Go slow and controled and no excessively heavy weighted dips. I don't put more than a plate on the dip belt anymore.
Good luck bud but definately look on like webmd or a similar website to see what info is out there.
