If you're talking about whey protein you only get about 25% BCAA's out of Whey. If you are eating enough whole food proteins (no powders) you are probably getting enough BCAA's. Some like to supplement as well and also they are good for fasted cardio to prevent muscle breakdown.
BCAA is branched chain amino acid consisting of three amino acids--> leucine:isoleucine:valine, most often dosed in 2:1:1 as a nutritional supplement. Protein is like a string of amino acids consisting of the 3 BCAA's and 20 different amino acids in total. BCAA's are EAA (essential amino acids) meaning your body cannot produce enough of them so you must obtain them through diet.
So the answer to your question is no, protein and bcaa are not the same, BUT protein will often contain BCAA's. As said above a good diet without a protein shake will give you more than a sufficient source of BCAA's, yet people like to take loads and loads of it just to be sure.
