Americas role in Irelands freedom struggle

Now i consider myself well read in modern conflict in N Ireland, the era of the Troubles, and have read just about every book out there on accounts from both sides.
I was watching a docu about earlier history of conflict between Ireland and British rule and was surprised at the American support right from the early days, hard to believe the relationship between America and Britain today given that America sympathised with Ireland's plight to the extent of arms supplies.
we all know of the arms running from America to the Provisional IRA in the 70's-80's and rumour that it still goes on with Real IRA today, American authorities had/have nothing to do with this and have infact imprisoned republican activists. but it seems that in the very early days that the American government had an interest in opposing Britain on this. interesting stuff.

Ive been really into a series called " Nazi collaborators ". One of the episodes focused on Germany's attempts to utilize the IRA in attacks against England's interests.

The concept of one state attacking another state by proxy is nothing new. Ill have to look for the History of Ireland.

I, like you guys love history, and WWII and he nazi History is very interesting to me.

Growing up I would read about American sympathies for the Irish and the opposition of British rule. I know a lot of funds were raised in the US. I would read about it because even as a kid I thought oppressive occupational governments were dickish, and thought home rule was appropriate. The IRA was the first group I ever remember being called "terrorists."

I never knew a lot about the issue (so please don't mind if I used some bad terminology), but always thought it was interesting. Time for some reading!

on the Germany thing, British army personnel were targeted by PIRA during the Troubles, not sure if there was any collaboration from German elements though

yes, the American funding and arms sourcing group was known as NORAID.

its amazing the kind of stuff that went on, i bet ppl from other countries would be astounded to know there was sometimes collusion between some republican groups and loyalist terrorist outfits on taking out rogue figures, kind of turns the whole thing on its head
