Looking to buy a handgun... Need some input....

Ok so im looking to buy a hand gun for CC (taking course soon) just mainly for self protection. The area I live in every other week has some sort of armed robbery or assault and even though Im 6' 3" 200+lbs I feel size will do nothing when a guns being drawn on you. My price range is $400-500 MAX and I am fine with buying a used gun if anything for cheaper.

Any input would be appreciated

Would like to note I dont care if the gun is high caliber or not. The way I see it is if I was ever put in a situation that I did need to use it for defense, 2 bullets center mass will drop a person. Also want to point out whatever bullets would be cheapest in the long run if I were to go to the range on a regular basis

You should consider the Smith and Wesson .38 special. Nice size, easy to carry on your person and you will never have to worry about it failing you

to the op, I've take the ccw course. pretty basic to intermediate level stuff they teach. as for guns i like the .40 cal. as for cheap bullets, walmart has the best deals, but for just load and carry not using in the range, id step up a cpl notches an invest in sum hallow points or sumthng.

go sig sauer or colt .45/40acp, stream line and in a IWB(leather) it hides nicely, or go with a Hammerless snub .38 revolver

been doing some research and im interested in a gun that I can also buy a conversion for to shoot 22s so I could just go to the range and run through a few hundred rounds without it killing the wallet too much, basically carry the higher cal rounds for CC and when I ever go to the range just convert it to the 22 for the day

You could get a hammerless 357 . You can carry with 357 rounds - possibly the best stopping power load in existence. Then you can plink at the range with 38's. No conversion required and 38 is one of the cheapest handgun loads around.
Just a thought.

hey saused up, some good points here, after
many years taking people shooting I would suggest finding a range that rents and invest some time in discovering what fits your hand, you will develop some preferences right away. The CC equation is very personal and very debated as to carry methods etc. Guaranteeing you a journey there as you discover what works for you. This segment of the hand gun market is off the charts with choices, maybe not as sexy but a hammer-less revolver can still be a contender against semi-autos as inkedup pointed out^^ plus a used and very serviceable pistol can be had in your $ range , let us know your progress, one of my favorite topics..

My best advice for CC is dont go for something that looks cool or something that makes you feel like dirty harry. Go with what you can wear and hardly notice. I made the mistake of going for a glock 27, subcom 40 cal. It packed a mean punch but it was obnoxious to carry around. So much so that I stopped using it for regular CC and only used it for situational CC like going the city late at night for dinner/show.

I vote for a Sig Sauer. I have the P250 9mm and Slfmade has the 40. I picked the 9mm because it was a bit lighter for me...Love it!

I love glocks.......GLOCK 31 ( 357 ) or Glock 22 ( .40 ) put some hydrashok in these bad boys and they will stop anything

Me thinks that Hollow points are overkill. If you hit someone with a decent sized round FMJ...they ain't going to be moving much (unless they happened to be cranked up on PCP or speed....or both).

I prefer accuracy over an fragmenting bullet.

I just recently purchased the 9MM RUGER LC9 w/ LAZER ..GREAT summer carry weapon ...aside from many rifles and shotguns it is only my 3rd handgun purchase ...I also have a GLOCK 27 GEN 4 (40cal) and .357 Smith and Wesson ..they're both big hammers so I don't enjoy carrying them on my hip much ...the lc9 has a nice bang to it I recommend it to anyone for self defense and the laser was ON POINT to the T straight out the box to the range no adjustment had to be done .. Great for hip firing out the holster ...glock27 is my favorite tho she sleeps with me everyyyyy night lol

I had the Glock 19 and now the Glock 23. I always load hollow points or shell shock because I want it to stop when I hit someone and not continue to whatever or whoever is behind them. I only use regular rounds for target practice. Remember it's doubtful you will need much accuracy because most times when they are used its close range. You wont be shooting 100s of yards or feet at someone and most likely not in a gunfight. It's typically a one shot deal you would hope.
