    Personal Trainers & Ego's

PLEASE NOTE THIS DOES NOT APPLY TO ALL PERSONAL TRAINERS - SOME OF MY VERY CLOSE FRIENDS ARE PERSONAL TRAINERS AND ARE FAR FROM THE DESCRIPTION I AM ABOUT TO GIVE

Okay, so lately in the gym I train in I've noticed a significant boost of personal trainers who you can tell are either stuck up ex-army men (in some shape or form) or people have just completed their PTI course and think they know everything.

    Here are some of the trainers in my gym I have categorized, just for a laugh to see if you identify with them ;

    The Males
The Bodybuilder(s) - There are two of these in my gym, both VERY nice men, very approachable, will usually come over and just chat away or help me out/spot me if I'm on my own. If I have any questions I usually go to them, very good shape and not cocky about it, just generally nice guys.

The "Fitness" Trainer - There are again, two of these, both have very little muscle mass, both are very lean, one is very short one lankyish with a weird shape, but both are as cocky/up themselves as the other. Complete knobs and I'd rather headbutt a wall than hold a conversation with these wannabe's. Usually doing pullups to look bigger than they are while showing off to every female they can (the "Bodybuilders" you'll usually catch laughing at these guys).

The Older Trainer - This guy is the most anal person I've ever met. He came over to me and my training buddy telling us how we were going to injure ourselves because we didn't have "collars" on our bars while squatting/benching (THEIR CALLED CLIPS IN MY BOOKS BUT W.E). Constantly comes over to tell us not to slam the weights down (my buddy usually drops them on pulleys ets, but nothing VICIOUS or massively loud) even though every trainer there literally throws shit about like they own the place. Complete and utter knob.

The Chubby Trainer - This guy strolls around with his chubby torso and very small amount of LBM like he's an Arnie clone, you'd genuinely swear this guy knew something about himself that nobody else does. Swags up to people giving them the most retarded advice I've ever heard, clearly just off a PTI course that he did through a gym and now thinks he's some sort of nutritional/training expert. Not a complete knob, but loses marks in my book because he thinks he's something he's not, and isn't afraid to swag like it.

    The Females

The Blondes - So stuck up it hurts to most people in the gym (usually very polite to me) which is infuriating, unless people are aesthetically pleasing they completely shun them. Think everyone should bumlick them and got offended when they said "Hi" to me and smiled, and I just shunned them back (I HATE stuck up people, even if their cool to me).

The Aggressive, Scary, Intimidating, Hench, TANKS of Females - Usually very nice, but scare the f*ck out of me.

Well, that's it, I got bored and thought I'd leave this here for you guys to read, maybe you'll get a laugh out of it when you recognize trainers from your gym, maybe not. Oh well, hope you enjoyed!

Most of the test to become a trainer are a joke. i studied for mine. Then it was a weekend test. Day 1 was written and day 2 was hands on training. Most of the people there didnt look they ever worked out.
The sat night i had to bounce at a club and after my girl wanted to party. So i got about 2 hours sleep and was still fvcked up for my functional part of the test. and had no issues

We must work out at the same gym...

I have those exact dbags at my gym.. Those who know they have it "the bodybuilder type" are confident n cool. The one's who are twigs or feel inferior on the inside must go wayy beyond to act like they belong training ppl.. it's kinda sad..

I think most trainer's you see at these large corporate gyms are inferior n have this self esteem complex where they need to assert their "knowledge" or superiority on the people who workout in"their" gym. (Notice I said most, not all, before anyone gets their panties in a bunch). In my experience, most better trainers work in smaller gyms or have their own studio. These large corporate companies breed drones to spew their "knowledge" n sell services to meet quotas IMO

one of the trainers at my gym is a well known ifbb pro. I never talked to him but i think he is a tool for wearing the spandex zumba pants. And he will have on purple sneakers on day with a purple hat to match. Then next day a different color scheme.

I would never use a trainer that is smaller than me. I know one doesn't have to be big in order to be a wealth of knowledge, but I trust the bigger guys to have first hand experience, especially with eating to grow.

I have mostly ignored trainers. I like seeing them train the new members as I believe it gives the new folks a better chance of sticking with it. I feel bad for the new members that walk into a gym and don't know where to start.

Good post. A lot of trainers are douchebags who take advantage of beginners in the gym. A good trainer is someone who listens and designs a program including diet to help their client meet their specific gials. NOT someone who simply tells newbs to do exactly what they tell all their clients to do. Just because an exercise lloks exotic and involves rubber bands and balance balls doesn't mean it should replace the fundamentals of working out to grow.

I live in Vancouver - a city that always jumps on the latest trends with a passsion - and I can't count how many times I've seen a trainer at my gym working with some skinny geezer and is making him do all kinds of funky shit in the gym and it just looks embarrasing. These trainers don't want to tell these guys the cold hard truth: nothing is going to replace heavy work with free weights for increasing muscle mass, yet you hardly ever see them push their clients in that direction. Guess the reason why is because if they did their clients would quickly realize there is no need for a trainer.

The only thing a trainer is good for is motivation. But if you lack motivation perhaps you should stay out of the gym altogether or find a training partner who will motivate you for free.

    Just my 2 cents.

^^^ not everyone is looking for muscle mass. Some people have health issues and are trying to exercise to help the issues. Some have injuries and are trying to recover and work past them. Everyone has a different reason for being in the gym.

I totally agree with OP but I think it's ignorant to think or say you wouldn't use a personal trainer smaller than you.

Just my two cents otherwise great

Trained people for years..don't pay anyone to train you unless they are a elite or master trainer..its a waste of money ..they are the only experienced ones.. the test for entry into the biz is a knock off and a joke. Only get trained by master trainers who have 8-10 years.

They cost more but its money well spent

I agree as I workout at a nearby Golds and if i'm able to go in the morning, there are many older folks in there exercising for various reasons and most are health related. A few of the older men have had heart attacks and are there to rebuild their health. Me I just go to look at the guys while they shower...

Totally agree that there are some people who aren't there to train for mass. But, and I am just refering to the gym I go to right now, you may want to use cable station to do cable cross overs and all of a sudden some effeminate male trainer and his client will waltz over to the cable and start hooking up rubber band contraptions to the station your at, like it's all goood to just interrupt my routine. And then he and his client proceed to do a half hearted set once every five minutes or so, all the while chatting each other up and diddling with their smart phone etc. Not cool imho. So I tell them firmly but fairly you guys are just going to have to wait till I am finished what I am doing here. The contract I signed when I joined did not say anywhere that trainers with clients have priority access to anything...To which I get a bunch of eye rolling and neck snapping from these two...it was just sickening IMO. Now every time I go workout and that trainer is there with any client he gives me my space but he still has the pissy look on his face that just make me want to wipe it off.

I guess I just don't respect a trainer who doesn't look like he is that beast and plays with phone while working.

Ditto on everything except the fitness trainers at my gym are pretty chill dudes . The old guy at the gym whos absolutely horribly keeps pissing my little brother off he was going to do a max rep of 225 and the old guy mid rep walked over ripped it up and then proceeded to tell him to use light weight of about 95 lbs because thats what he felt was apropiate for him hes screwed with his workout 2x except the second time he walked over and stripped the bar while my brother was putting the weights on.

My brother has reported him they did nothing the guys worthless all his clients are fat and have shown 0 improvement in 5 months I'm starting to wonder why they keep him and the fat trainer who eats fried food on the job, meanwhile my friend whos a natural bodybuilder and goes to college for muscle science can't get a job there because they don't need anymore trainers meanwhile they hired 2 stuck up chicks and some other guy who recently passed the their certification tests. I guess I'll just never understand this gym .

Its sad us good trainers get a bad name because of the idot's who take a weekend course and think they know everything! As a trainer im always taking courses! if I finish one then im taking another and if im not taking a course im reading books or going to seminars with other strength coaches, there are not many trainers out there who do this but you can find one or two in most gyms who do know there shit! The last gym I worked at was large and out of the 15 trainers who worked at the gym there were only 4 of us who really knew there shit! the rest were horrible! I started my own business about 6 months ago because I ws tired of being mashed in with these chumps and making only 30% while the gym would take the rest.

I've seen a lot of shitty trainers in the gym. Most of them usually are just using their job to pick up on their chick clients. But I've never seen any of them do shit as obnoxious as the stuff you guys say.

But I see the point in the trainers who push the latest fad workouts on their clients. You kind of have to keep the customer interested if you want him to keep coming back. The average person isn't normally disciplined enough to hit the weights, swim some laps in the pool or run on the treadmill. They have to turn in to some new hip game for them.

I was doing an arnold press a couple months ago and asked a trainer for a couple forced reps, at the end he says ''thats a weird shoulder press why you do it like that?'' so yeah the trainers at my gym arent worth a bolix, a 10week course and then thats it they a certified trainer at 5'10 150lbs with no visable abs, all it does it show you how to use weights and machines without injury not how to build muscle and strenght

I want to vent as well !

For the last 6 months I have had a personal trainer, I use to think the world of her until recently .. she is on my back 24/7 about doing her cycle classes and gets angry if I don't come I mean she literally doesn't want to speak to me (makes me do two back to back plus come in the morning) thats 3 hours of cardio !! I don't want to over train.

Now that my sessions are over she comes to were I am training and starts training me ! I can't get away from her .. today I was training with another female and she screamed out 'HEY YOU I THOUGHT YOU WERE GOING HOME NOW YOURE DOGGING ME' I feel like I am being stalked. Today I was training with a female and I was speaking to another P.T and he was showing me an exercise and she was sitting in front of me with this look on her face like she wanted to kill me...

She tells me that lifting heavy weights will make me bulky
she tries to make me run with her everyday
she's been a p.t for 10 years and she has barely any muscle definition just lean and skinny legs and a gut .. (I shouldn't critics based on the way she looks) but cmon obviously she over trains and does to much cardio for her body not to change...

    Okay Im finished venting lol

Agree, but that really depends on the gym you go to. Say you go to Gold's, for instance, you will probably get a very sympathetic ear from the owner or manager and the employee will get a dressing down and hopefully change their ways.

Now let's say you're going to the local Y and you tell the adminstration there about it. Nothing's going to happen to the guy. Plus he is going to know about the complaint and talk poop and gossip behind your back to co-workers clients etc. very possible. Now, everytime you got to the gym you won't know who is in on this drama...The last thing most of us want at they gym is any drama or distractions...

Best to find a new gym if it's a big problem and you're not sure whose side management is really on. After all they make money with these guys right?

Anyways, I have 2 memberships, one to Gold's and one to a local gym that's closer to my place. Needless to say, when I get too frustrated with all the shinannigans at the local gym I head to Gold's.

This has nothing to do with her ego, and everything to do with her lack of skills in the personal training department. What's probably happening is not enough people are attending her classes & she's not getting enough custom from training people (which is what they employ PT's for in gyms) so maybe she feels her job is under jeopardy, this would possibly lead to her being aggressive to people who had taken interest in her and then dropped it.

My advice to you is to inform the gym manager of her actions, tell him/her you feel like you're being forced into things you don't want to do, because she's basically hindering your progress and will end up making you change gyms or quit altogether.
