my girl has started doing lat pull downs, question is does a wide grip or a narrow grip work better to build that lean fitness model type build.

The width of the grip wont have much influence on whether you attain a lean fitness look or thick build, that will be almost entirely dependant on diet. Best advice is to use a variety of grips. Do wide one workout, medium the next and narrow after that. You could also incorporate all 3 grip variations over 3 sets during the same workout.
I incorporate all 3 grips over the 3 sets for myself
For her I had read somewhere that rotating over time worked well for women.
