Stuck in my quest for TRT

I have been off my Androgel prescription for 2 weeks now because my current doctors office (WESTMED) screwed up the prescription TWICE!!! They sent my local pharmacy two different prescriptions for amounts of Androgel that don't even exist. My doctor shoots down any conversation about self injections, believes that I'm fine even though I don't feel 100%, and now this.

Safe to say I'm done with this place and I've been looking for a specialist in my area but still can't find anyone good. I was wondering if I should just call up some other endos and urologist to see if they know more, or is that a dead end as it seems to be?

My best friend is diabetic and most of his endos wont entertain injections conversations. Otherwise I have no experience with those types of drs.

Sorry man, sucks. Finding a good doc isn't easy, i'm on the quest myself.

I've pretty much been 'cold calling' endo's / urologists and asking if they specifically deal with and/or prescribe TRT. From there, you can ask a few key questions (e.g. self administering, etc) to get a feel as to whether or not they're worth scheduling a consultation with.

Damn... and if you can't find one in our area (NJ/NY), it's hard to imagine finding one anywhere. There's always a diamond in the rough though. Keep trying!

I know one in CT. I gave a friend a name of a dr in BK in NYC but this guy did not believe in HCG or an AI and was giving my friend 400mgs in one shot every two weeks. Sent his estrogen sky high but my friend is smart guy and eventually found a dr in ct who believes in all 3

Steven - If you are willing to fly for a day (in and out) there are a number of Physicians who specialize in TRT for men, work with all types of men with all kinds of conditions - even diabetes - who will help you and treat you correctly.

My Physician sees men all over the country here in SoFla...there are others.

They generally only need to see you physically once and after that everything is virtual.

Start calling doctors in your area and ask basic questions before you set up an appointment. Find out if they offer such prescriptions or are willing to write them. While a lot of docs won't (obviously) you might be surprised how many will. I've actually received two TRT scripts from basic family doctors...both scripts 200mg Testosterone Cypionate per week. As odd as it may sound, look for doctors who are under 50 years old. Most of the older guys are stuck in the old way of thinking and can be very difficult to talk to. This isn't to say they're all this way, they're not, but you'll find the younger generation is becoming more curious about this topic, while many of the older guys won't even consider it.

Search the nearest big city on google. Take a road trip because its worth it.

Traveling a few hours is totally worth it if your alternative is shit.

Wow I feel really fortunate. I randomly picked a family doctor for my HMO had a few good reviews on yelp. He lets me inject myself and essentially I write my own prescription and order my own bloodwork. But he's also like 35 years old. So to reiterate what Metalject said. Find a younger guy that isn't set in his ways and is willing to work with you. Remember YOU are the customer, if you don't like the treatment you are getting, take your business somewhere else. Easier said than done at times because of insurance plans or lack of good doctors in your area.

I know what juice2012 is getting at, and good is relative. Ultimately there are a few levels of TRT doctors... roughly I would say they are:

Docs who know nothing (but typically think otherwise, lol) and will prescribe nothing
Docs who know nothing but will prescribe
Docs who know something but will prescribe and listen to what you have to say as well as experts in the field
and finally,
Docs who know a lot and treat effectively

Keep in mind, that fourth option is very rare! It is ideal, but we are talking about doctors like Dr Dach, Crisler, Mariano, etc etc. These are leaders in the field and most of us simply don't have access to them and/or know where to find them.

So... that means if you want to be treated for low T most of us settle for less than the best. My current doctor knows something, and that was important to me... I did NOT want to lead my own treatment in TRT even though I know far more than your average internist knows about male TRT. If I'm paying a doctor good money then I want their years of experience in the field. That's something the average person cannot buy or read or otherwise learn about unless you are out in the field.

And yet, there are some people who simply want to be prescribed drugs for TRT and are OK if they don't have the ideal medical care just as long as they feel good and have optimal hormones. Basically, if it works and it aint broke then just go with it!

Yeah it's insane that your own family physician won't treat you for low T for fear of getting his license revoked from the feds. So one has to fly all over the nation to find one who will. They have the doctors running scared, but ask for pain meds and the docs are more than willing to shell out scripts. That's messed up IMO. But steroids are a hot subject thanks to the news media and their way of blowing everything way out of proportions. Family doctors can't afford to lose their license to practice over a few patients who would be prescribed Testosterone for low T, verses all their other patients who come regularly for other reasons, in example eyes ears nose and throat infections and such. So they balance it all out and realize prescribing Test and running the risk of one patient selling it out on the market and get busted would cause the ole doc to lose his license. So instead they farm you all out to the Endo, but they are visited by the pharmaceutical companies pushing the newest topical gels claiming all kinds of fantastic results offering sometime kickbacks for pushing that crap instead of weekly injections. That makes it more and more difficult to get them to allow you to go the self administered injection route. What's insane is that the gels run around 350.00 a month out of pocket expense verses around 98 bucks for a 10ml vial of Test-C containing 2,000 mg's of test. One would think that the Insurance companies would prefer the doctor to prescribe the cheaper of the two and pressure the Doc to go that route whenever feasible, but I guess not. It seems everyone on HRT is getting shammed these days at least for the most part. So when you find an Endo or even a family Doctor who will prescribe injections, you'd better hang onto him or her. I asked my own family doctor here while back about prescribing for low-T. Of course he said I watch too many commercials and at my age I should be fine, but he does not prescribe Test for the reasons at the top. The fear of losing his practice. That's just sad when Doctors are threatened to not help their own patients by our Government. So much for Obama Care hey?

Never a shortage of Androgel though, which your insurance is more than happy to pay hundreds of dollars every month (And over 800 dollars a month in my case)!
