    Youngster looking at TRT

Long story short....here's what's going on:

I've been suspicious that something has been wrong for a long time. I had my test levels checked twice over the summer.
    May: Total testosterone= 337
    July: Total testosterone = 317

I went into my family doctor yesterday and showed him this. He won't believe me that those numbers are low...and I know being 20, almost 21, I should be in the upper 600's for optimal health. He thinks all of my symptoms are just "depression" and should be treated with antidepressants.

I'm planning on shopping around for a different doctor, but my best options are over two hours away from home. Anyone have any information that I could bring in to show him that he is wrong? I didn't even ask for TRT, I just wanted something to be done. If we can restart my natural production, that would be great, as I would like to have kids one day. Any advice?

That's the plan. I'm getting the B.W. done at the clinic I normally go to, and then taking the results to seattle. But if I can find some form of information to bring to my current doctor to show them what I need, that would make my life a whole lot simpler.

I think imo you are going to have a difficult time CONVINCING your current doctor of anything. My guess is no matter what info you bring in or test that you run he already has a mindset that trt is steroid abuse and will not bend on his beliefs.

You are probably right. Do you think I should just order my own bloodwork through the hospital and then bring the results to more progressive docs to get treatment?

I have no experience with trt myself (thank god) but I have some friends that have run into your situation (old school docs).

My guess is that any new doc you see is going to want to do their own BW. I might suggest researching docs around you and find out who is an advocate of trt and just let them handle bw and everything.

Yeah, old school docs are a pain in the ass in a case like this.
Thanks for the advice. I'll try to find some docs first.

Hey JT, if you are planning on getting BW done and taking the results somewhere else, the other place is more than likely going to want to run thier own test anyways. You might be better off just going to the second place and getting everything re-done. It is really at their discretion, but being as I am in and out and have a family full of DRs and nurses, and they all re order BW, even if its been a week or 2.

none. I just got lucky and have something ****ed up going on in my body.

An update though...after having a serious talk with my family, my sister brought up the idea of accutane that I took when I was 16. A year following that, I started having sexual dysfunction and lost a ton of weight. I've got a lot of the symptoms of crohns disease but haven't been checked out yet...and i've got low T. It looks like my problem could possibly be bigger than I thought. I guess my next stop is a checkup with a doc about accutane injury :\
I'm now into the 3-5 years after using accutane and symptoms are getting a lot worse...which is typical. I hadn't even thought of this...but all of my weird health issues over the past year or so match the claims of other accutane users. Looks like I might have some lawsuit money coming my way ...

    Thanks...I hope so too.

From what i'm finding....there isn't a solution. These symptoms are there for life, and will only get worse....

    Erectile dysfunction
    Complete loss of libido
    Dry skin/slow healing
90% less sensation with sex, and some things like oral are actually unbearably uncomfortable. Feels like pins and needles.
Orgasms are incredibly difficult to achieve because nothing actually feels good.

(A lot of the symptoms take a few years to develop, sometimes up to ten years after discontinuing the drug)

This should be a warning to anyone who thinks accutane is a solution to acne. I'd trade my old pizza face for this any day :\

I talked to a PA friend of mine who said they try not to prescribe it unless ALL else fails and acne is cronic...but I have read some things on it and can't believe it's still prescribed

I know...it's usually used as a last resort. I've seen people on here talking about using it to manage cycle induced acne...dear god are they in for a world of trouble down the road!

I can not believe this stuff is still prescribed. It's destroyed my life....I can't imagine how many others are in the same boat.

Kind of early to be making a statement like that, dont you think? Maybe you should see a qualified doctor to try and figure out exactly what is going on first before jumping to conclusions. Hope you get it all sorted out though, those symptoms do not look fun.

Unfortunately, there is no cure for crohns. They can remove part of your intestines, but you still have symptoms. The changed sexual sensations are there permanently, unless some new treatment comes out down the road.

also it depends how bad the chrons is. I have 2 friends with it. Neither has the sexual issues you are describing

Crohns isn't related to the sexual issues.

Accutane is related to both crohns, and the sexual issues.

Find a good Endocrinologist, not a Family doctor. It is hard enough to find an Endocrinologist that knows enough about this type of thing let alone a Family Doctor. You are young and don't want to be on TRT for life. Find out what is wrong and try to fix it before you head down the TRT road. Doesn't surprise me the Family Doc wanted to prescribe anti-depressants. This is what the drug reps are 'selling' these days because that's where the money is at.

That's ok. There's a lot to read on these forums, sometimes we read too quickly.

I had called ahead to see if my family doctor was familiar with and did TRT. The receptionist asked around and told me yes, that all of the doctors there did it. So, I felt like it was reasonable to try. You are right about the antidepressants...that really is where the money is.

It's a perfect scheme, too. Get someone addicted to something that makes them complacent. A customer for life!

And I agree; if I can find a way to solve the problem, rather than treating it with TRT, that would be much better. After all, I have always wanted to have kids of my own. Adoption would be an option, but we all would like to see a little bit of ourselves in our little ones.

You may want to get a couple of other opinions and see some other doctors. At your age for it to be low you should be
checked out to see whats going on.

    Total and free test
    prolactin
    LH/FSH
    TSH

Should have it tomorrow or the next day. Jesus, a $300 morning.
