the day after a workout do you have to feel sore in order to grow?

At the mo I work one or two muscles intensely per day each week, my muscles feel very sore the day after a workout.
Next week im changing my routine to a upper lower all over body split, with this new routine I don't think my muscles will be as sore the next day as there get with my current routine. I read that your muscle don't need to be sore in order to grow.

In a strange way I like feeling sore the next day, but is it necessary?

I get sore too.. pretty much every workout, if not sore my muscles are tight... your muscles being sore the next day means you have stressed then more than they are used to and they are healing to promote growth. Now if you dont get sore i dont think it means they are not growing, but if you are never sore or even tight then in my opinion your muscles are used to the load and the routine and you are not getting the maximum workout.. the way i look at it, if you hit it hard no matter what you are doing you are gonna be sore or tight...

    two things going on

    1) exercise to stimulate a growth response
    2) sore = tearing down muscle fiber

    you don't need #2 to get #1

if you have been in the gym awhile, with good intensity, your muscle fibers should have already adapted and not much of #2 going on.

having said that, we all get a "little" bit sore the next day to a certain extent.

Ive always changed my routine if I don't ache the next day, Ive always associated been sore with having a good workout, but I've been reading lye McDonalds website recently where he explains this is not necessary. He says Nor do u need to intensely pound a muscle so much that it feels sore the next (which is what I've been doing)

So im going to give this lower intensity all over body training a shot.

Thanks roman, very informative as always :-)

In a sadistic kind of way I like the pain feels nice, you feel like you have done a good workout when you ache don't you. Lol

    thanks mate.

tbh, I always feel a bit sore the next day.

but there are diffferent types of soreness. one is the "i've ripped something" type. the other is just being comfortably sore, but it doesn't functionally get in the way. when i was younger, the next day "comfortably sore" really didn't happen much. I chalk it up to getting a bit older.......

Yeah it will be interesting to see how my muscle feel the next day with my new routine, seen as I will only be doing 3 to 4 working sets per muscle. (Upper lower split)
