I have heard Canseco talk about it many times, as well as many others. But when did steroids become illegal? And how were they obtained when they were legal? I just cant remember ever seeing them being sold and have always assumed they were "illegal" to an extent.

1990 became a controlled substance, schedule III. I guess it was still sort of illegal before if used for other than medical reasons.

They were never obtainable OTC, but by Rx like any other unscheduled medication. Basically all that changed were the penalties and ease with which they could be prescribed.

It is quite funny to consider the majority reason behind them being made illegal was to ban sports cheating yet the majority of steroid users are using them for cosmetic effects and is your average gym rat thanks baseball

I knid of figured this. Canseco, Arnold, several others in the spotlight talked about they were "legal" back in the day. I never imagined them being as easy as walking into your local CNC and picking up a bottle of Dbol or Testosterone. I think those guys just tried to make it seem less "illegal" than it actually was. I mean, with TRT as rampant as it is now, I dont see it being more restricted now as then, other thn people understanding the need for them in certain cases, such as lowT.

Once upon a time there was a man who used 4 gallons of Trenbolone a day and miraculously lived. People saw it, and were in denial about how one man could use so much Trenbolone, love it, and survive, and so they deemed that from then on, anabolic steroids should be illegal. That man was me.
Seriously though, anabolic steroids were made illegal in 1990 when the Anabolic Steroid Control Act was passed, and they were added to the list of Schedule III drugs in the AMERICAN Controlled Substances Act. What sparked this was the 1988 Olympics when Ben Johnson won and was afterwards supposedly tested positive for Winstrol. This was in many ways the final trigger, spark, final blow, what have you that set off the powder keg on anabolic steroid legislation.
Prior to the Anabolic Steroid Control Act in 1990, AAS was feely legal in the United States. You couldn't just pick it up from over the counter like you can with vitamins, but you could feely obtain it from a physician. I believe in most pharmacies, you could walk to the dispensary in the back and ask for it and receive it right there with no problems at all (much like how you can do this today with injectable vitamin B12 in MOST places, especially here in Canada). Other methods of obtaining it was through someone who could get it 'off the back of a truck' type of deal, much like the way that can be done with perscription medications that are not illegal but not available OTC (such as Nolvadex or many SERMs and AIs, for example).
I'd just like to make a quick side note here for a second, speaking as a Canadian where anabolic steroids are not illegal for personal posession and use (over here they are under Schedule IV drugs in the Canadian Drugs And Substances Act). The idea that steroid use is bad is a USA projection on reality, and it is something other countries have been pressured into toeing in line with, although up here in Canada we made it criminal because of the national guilt-fest over Ben Johnson (who was our athlete). Before that, it was like illegally importing aspirin here in Canada (as well as in the USA - nobody gave a shit as I mentioned above already). Anabolic steroids were actually not even added to the controlled substances list up here in Canada until 1996! Prior to 1996, it was SO EASY and LEGAL to obtain, sell, distribute, etc. anabolic steroids! Nobody cared! And as I mentioned already, in Canada, steroids are Schedule IV under the CDSA, or wherever in the Criminal Code of Canada, and it's a category that we in a manner of speaking created explicitly for steroids because even our whacked parliamentarians couldn't see the point in putting it in Schedule III with marijuana, Schedule II with Valium, Oxycodone, etc and Schedule I with Coke, Heroin et al.. But in the US steroids have been branded a "dangerous narcotic" and are in the A-list; and as per a news item, the penalties are being upped severely in the United States, with individual pills now being potentially a charge each or something ridiculous along those lines. Witch-hunts, stake-burnings, and necktie parties over something that.... let's see, makes you stronger, generally happier, and pretty well forces you to eat right, might get you bald under certain specific conditions, and maybe you'll have some endocrine problems if you don't do you due dilligence in proper cycling protocol, and maybe an enlarged left ventricle. And so in closing my little statement here, let me get this straight, everyone..... the doofuses who made this stuff illegal are stoked on booze, cigarettes, and prescription psychotropics..... and why this stuff illegal?
By the way, I met Ben Johnson when I was a child. I vividly remember it. I was about 7 or 8 years old with my mother in a Ministry of Transportation (that's basically our DMV for you American folks) office in Toronto. I remember my mother recognizing him there and they sparked up a conversation. She got his autograph on something and gave it to me. At the time I didn't make much of it, as I didn't really understand who he was. I don't have the autograph anymore, I lost it. But if I knew back then the things I know today, I would have had words with him....
