    Pre-workout shake

Just wondering what people think of this pre-workout shake.

    25 grams whey protein
    45 grams maltodextrin
    10 grams BCAAS
    5 grams creatine

I dont really like pre-workouts like no-explode because I find they are a massive waste of money and dont really do anything that a 5 cent caffeine pill couldn't.

Also I think I am going to cut my current 200 mg caffeine pill before pre-workout to avoid it conflicting with the creatine.

    Thoughts??

    Thanks

Why don't you eat a real meal?

    Maltodextrin? No, no, no.

I would suggest eating a real meal 1.5 hours before you lift and stay away from a powdered form of protein. You want slow digesting carbs so you can sustain a level energy throughout your lift.

There are actual pre-workout drinks out there that DO work and will help, usually taken 15 minutes before a lift, you just have to find one that works best for you.

hmmm due to my daily situation I cant really eat right before a workout because I cant carry it with me all day. maybe I will do a bit of a compromise and through in some oats instead of maltodextrin before the workout. Better than the original idea?

I am more thinking of a 15 minute before workout kind of thing here

    Why 15 minutes?

As suggested above, a solid meal 1.5-2 hours before is ideal. If you simply can't eat but can drink a shake an hour or so before, there are better options than that listed.

This is what my pre-workout drink looks like:

1.5 scoops Hemo rage ultra concentrate
1 scoop Metabolic Nutrition C.G.P creatine
1 scoop BCAA powder (10 grams roughly)
    2 scoops iforce hemavol

small amount of water and have this 15 minutes before I lift. The energy, focus, pumps I get from it are great, from start to finish.

He's asking what kind of pre-workout supplement he can take. I think he has the pre-workout meal and pre-workout drink mixed up, as they are 2 different things. His choice of protein powder is what is throwing me off.

Not a fan of the maltodextrin or straight whey... so yea... I guess i'm not a fan of your preworkout shake. My preworkout meal happens at 5am, so I prefer something fast and easy too... but here's what my shake looks like:

    1/2 scoop ON Casein
    1/2 scoop ON Pro Complex
    1/2 cup oats
    3/4 cup unsweetened almond milk
    3/4 cup egg whites
1/2 cup 1% milkfat cottage cheese
1/4 cup nonfat plain Greek Yogurt
    1tbsp Natty PB

All blended with crushed ice, stevia, cacao powder, instant coffee, and creatine. Mostly real food, with a bit of added protein powder for flavor and extra protein if necessary. Fast, easy, and delicious.

ya I have taken a wide variety of pre--workouts including hemo rage and I personally think they are all b/s and way overpriced.

Yes, I think you might be right.

OP what and when is the last meal before you lift and what do you want out of your pre workout shake exactly?

I do not have them mixed up, I was more just wondering if taking protein and malto would be benificial for added energy before a workout

so with both your 1/2 scoops of protein you get one scoop total protein before workout. Do you just not like whey because of how quickly it is absorbed and used by the body?

Ok, so you want a pre-workout meal that you can drink. GB's is stout and I'd give that a try if I were you. A variety of different protein blends which are digested at different rates, good fats from the PB and complex carbs for slow digesting sustainable energy throughout your lift.

Yes, in addition to the protein from the egg whites, cottage cheese, and yogurt. I'm not a fan of straight whey mainly for the reason you stated, but furthermore I just prefer to take advantage of varying absorption rates and amino profiles. Note that ON Pro Complex contains whey and whey peptides, so I do get SOME.

lol, thanks Animal. OP - you can play around with my shake obviously to fit your own macros. Admittedly, mine is protein heavy. I'll probably drop the powder completely at some point. But you can add/remove carbs, fats, etc. to your liking. It's the reason I prefer to make my own shake - I have complete control over macros.
