Of course, a change in diet and reduction in caloric intake will have the most profound effects, especially coupled with exercise. This is definitely the best approach. But I'm guessing your wife is looking for an additional boost.
Did she consider growth hormone or the ECA stack? I know some women who've had excellent results with hGH, exercise is needed of course.
The ECA stack (Ephedra, Caffeine, and Aspirin) has been clinically proven to cause weight loss, even in the absence of exercise (although results will be greatly enhanced with exercise). However, ephedra is no longer available bc of safety concerns. Synthetic ephedra is still available as ephedrine. You can get ephedrine under the brand names Bronkaid and Primatene tabs in most pharmacies. Bc of the potential detrimental effects and deaths attributed to ephedra use (although controversial) , you should definitely consult with her physician before starting this regimen.
There's a new weight loss drug out called Qsymia, available by prescription. It's a combination of controlled release topiramate and phentermine, which are both available separately as generics. This increases metabolism via phentermine and suppresses appetite via topiramate. This can only be taken under a doctor's supervision of course. There are other prescription weight loss agents available with limited efficacy, but independent results can vary dramatically. The list includes Dexedrine, Bontril, Desoxyn, and Didrex. They are all amphetamine derivatives with definite safety concerns and abuse potential. It would be hard to find a doctor willing to prescribe any of these.
