I.T people, quick question

So this should be an easy one for people who know what they are doing (unlike myself)

50mb fibre obtic broadband, if I connect the laptop to the router via a cable (dont know name of cable but you know what I mean) then I get 48-52mb on speedtest.net

If I go wireless then I get 18-22mb, a mate is sat beside me and he is getting 51mb when connecting wirelessly on his laptop and same using the cable, and Im sat literally 2 feet away at the minute when testing speed and the apartment is 1600sq/ft so it aint out of range or anything and therefore I dont think the problem is with the router

I think the problem may be from when I changed some settings to configure to work for i2p a while ago, I cant remember exactly I think I changed something with the proxy port? Would this make sense?

Anybody any ideas? Im handy enough with a laptop but when it gets technical like this then I get a little em confused

I've been out of IT for a while now, but the first thing I'd do is check the speed of my wireless nic card. If your computer is relatively new, it shouldn't be a problem, but I'd start there. It is an internal wireless card, right?

internal card yeah, dell laptop, 8gb i5 etc so it relatively up to date

Check and see how your wireless router is set up. Look under QoS (Quality of Service) settings. Also check which channels you are using and if its set to "Automatic" pick a channel # and use that one. The limiter in your wireless instance is the wireless throughput of the WiFi router itself. That is the bottle neck if you are plugging into the modem and seeing faster speeds. Also- check and see if you have a dual channel WiFi router as that makes a significant difference. In reality- with wireless if you get 80% of the advertised throughput of the router then you are getting the best it can offer.

If you need a new one: I'd suggest a new router- Dual Channel N.

this is the router cisco epc 3925, cant see dual channel but the specs online say dual band, im guessing it the same thing you refering to or am i wrong?

i understand what your saying about the router limiting the speed but my mate can get the full wireless 50mb on his laptop

going to make myself sound even thicker now but cant locate any QoS settings or the channels it is using, went through everything in control panel and only thing i could find that may be related to what your talking about is the port : com3, does that make a difference? i cant even find the proxy settings that i changed to get i2p working a while ago, i am clearly overlooking something to get into the settings your refering to, any idea what?

i swear im not that thick lol it just this is over my head a little, i can follow an instruction for stuff like this and thats about the depth of my skills there

Don't mess with it... in over your head.

The problem is both you and your mate can't get 50 mb/s AT THE SAME TIME from that router. The speed advertised in "G" or "N" is what's called "full duplex" meaning in "G" the 54 MB/s the router can do is shared between upload and download speed. It can't give you both 54 mb/s at the same time- only one; and only up or down not both.

Try having your mate shut off his computer and run the test alone. See a speed increase?

yeah we aint that bad we know it 50mb (about 5mb upload) between us so only one logged one and no downloads etc in background when doing a speed check, i might just ring up the provider and moan that i aint getting the full speed and see if they send somebody out, like ya said it over my head, thanks anyways mate

No no no... I mean the WIRELESS signal itself. The bandwidth of the wireless signal is shared. Meaning if you are both downloading at the exact same time that 54 MB/s wireless speed is cut in half. I'm not talking about the fibre connection.

Good explanation. It's funny, I have worked in IT for years but I have the hardest time speaking geek or explaining things. BTW if you do the test alone (without your buddy connected) and you still have the low/slow speeds it's probably YOUR nic in your computer and it's not capable of doing more or the setting are limited.
