Can someone please help me out with this? I've been doing some reading on 5x5 but can't seem to understand it quite right.

This is the first time I've been stumped by anything regarding fitness really, usually I understand things quickly but with all the different info out there on 5x5 can someone please explain a basic 5x5 routine for me.

Alright what about deload periods? And i'm seeing that generally there are only 2 different workouts done with a 5x5 routine. As in an A workout and B workout and you simply switch between those two throughout the week

I don't want to confuse anybody further, but the 5x5's I've used (not that I've used 5x5 tons) have always had you starting and finishing with the same weight.

When i used the 5x5 routine in the past, i first began with two 12 rep warm ups. Then 5 reps for first set to 3rd set. I then increased weight on forth and fifth set but still maintain 5 reps.

So my first to third set was about 75% 1RM. Last two sets were about 85-90% 1RM, sometimes more if i had a partner to assist in failure.

    My .02.

My use of 5x5 was like this

Set 1 warm up of 5 reps light weight 50% of working weight

Set 2 warm up set of 5 reps medium weight 75% of working weight

Sets 3-5 would be max weight (Mac working weight, not 1 rep max) so that 5th set I can barely make my 5th rep.

If I achieve all 5 sets of 5 reps, next week I add 2.5lbs per side. Progress is slow and steady and got my strength up nicely.

This is more of the idea I had in mind, sorry to confuse. I normally do one warm up, three at about 80% then the last to failure as heavy as I'm comfortable with that day.

Also been doing allot of 10x10 with the similar lay out.

Thanks everybody for the input. Exactly what I was looking for, not sure why this particular routine has confused me so much.

Exactly. I guess there are modifications to any routine, but from what I understand, this is the 'base' of it.
