    ATTN: Diet Gurus! (GBrice etc.)

Okay, so I've been noticing as I am working on getting my diet dialed in that about an hour or two after I eat carbs I'm suddenly exhausted. Now, I've been told in the past that I'm insulin resistant, but my A1C has always been on the low end of normal etc. and when I was younger I was hypoglycemic. So I guess my question is this: Is there a way to know for sure if I've become insulin resistant? Is there some way to know for sure whether or not a Ketogenic diet is best for me? I do know I'm a meso-endomorph and I tend to carry my excess body fat in my abdomen. I'm just wondering if the fatigue is to be expected because of just starting an exercise plan back up or if it's more likely diet-centric.

I know that's a jumble of run-on thoughts, but hopefully someone can make out what it is I'm trying to ask.

TIA for any help you can give.
    -Treasure.

Flattery in the title of a thread will get you.... everywhere!!

    A few questions:

1 - what are some examples of carb sources (I haven't sorted through your log as of yet)? Have you noticed fatigue after any specific sources vs. others?

2 - Who told you you're insulin resistant? I'm assuming a medical professional - did he/she run tests to confirm this diagnosis?

3 - You could do some relatively inexpensive at home testing using a glucose test and measuring your BGL's at different intervals following a carb meal. That won't specifically tell you whether or not you're insulin resistant or not, but it will give you some insight as to what's happening after you ingest carbs

Carrying excess bodyfat in the abdomen is one potential sign of insulin resistance, especially for women who typically store more fat in the hips and buttocks. What we CAN do, regardless of you being resistant or not, is work on increasing your insulin sensitivity. There are a few different ways to accomplish this, and it's not a quick turn around, but it's possible. I don't want to get too far right off the bat, so i'll await your responses.

FYI - years ago, I came to believe I was hypoglycemic. I was eating a PWO meal and then about an hour to two hours later, crashing HARD. I mean, if I laid down and shut my eyes, I'd be out in seconds. Scary actually. However, my carb sources at the time were loaded with sugar, so in retrospect, it's no surprise that I was crashing as BGL levels were spiking then dipping. Stable BGL's are a man's (woman's) best friend!

I've cut all refined carbs/sugars from my diet for weeks now. For instance, any carbs for breakfast and I'm ravenous and exhausted all day. Oats seem to do it the worst. Now if I have a Steak and egg type breakfast and have a carb with that, then I don't seem to have an issue.

But lunch today is a perfect example. Steamed brown rice. I don't seem to have as much of a reaction from sweet potatoes and veggie based carbs as I do true carbs. Corn also seems to be free of this side effect.

Yes, it was an MD that told me I'm insulin resistant but this is the same f*-ktard that gave me chemo for MS, and had a lipid panel run on me about a half hour after I had a double bacon cheese burger. He also put me on TPN while I was in the hospital and cut my calories down to like 500/day and accused me of sneaking food into the hospital being the reason I wasn't losing weight. He ran next to no tests on me during the two years I was under his care, and the ones he did run weren't run according to standard protocol. I trust nothing that this idiot has said. In fact, I fired him and every doctor he referred me to.

My hypoglycemia was actually diagnosed by an endo while I was a child after I passed out mid swim-meet due to blood sugar crashing.

To illustrate what I mean about my fat distro I'll see if I can find some pics of me at various weights that will show it appropriately.

In the jeans I was about 165ish. In the silver dress I was about 140, and in the purple shirt I am at 240-255.

Okay, I think I found some that not even the biggest perv can make me regret posting. The one of me in purple with the denim skirt is a month after I had an emergency c-section last year. The photos of me in silver are about 20lbs heavier than my goal weight.

Hang on - if you *weren't* to have a 'steak and egg' type breakfast with carbs, what would it be? Surely you're not eating carbs by themselves... e.g. a bowl of oats but nothing else?

In that case, I think the simple answer (not necessarily solution) in part is to stick with what works best. If oats and other 'true' carbs make you miserable, avoid them. Luckily, you have options that don't seem to affect you as severely, that's a good thing.

Having said that, you might find that you're better suited to a lower carb, higher fat type diet. Not necessarily ketogenic - but close to it. Starchy carbs @ 50g/day. Fibrous veggies however are open season - eat as much as you want.

I can't say i'm surprised. I'm finding more and more that an alarming number of docs out there are clueless, or using outdated protocols and methods at best. Very, very scary for the uninformed.

Well then, let's get back to silver and beyond!

This isn't going to be all that difficult. Correct me if i'm wrong - but you're not looking for a female bodybuilder's physique, correct? You simply want to be lean and at a 'healthy' weight and bodyfat percentage, correct?

It's been egg whites, veggies and oats.

It's even worse for the desperate.

That is correct. I'm just trying to get back into lifting for the joy of it, back to competing in triathlons and such. I put on mass way to fast and way too easy to make that a focus.
