Thread: Is it what you expected?

  1. #1

    Is it what you expected?

Your life........personal & / or professional.......is it what you expected or hoped for?

I ask because I'm going thorough some unexpected changes right now (for the better) in both my personal life & my professional life.. In my personal life.....I kinda saw the writing on the wall so the events that followed weren't really a surprise..........however........I NEVER expected to meet a girl that could unequivocally grab my undivided attention & refocus me........

Professionally.........I have decided to resign from my current career & start a new one that is totally opposite end of the spectrum.....(details to follow at a later date).....this decision was prompted by a burn out basically.......I have been in combat for going on 16 years, I was in the military for 12 years, (10 in Special Forces / Operations) & my current career is very similar to what I did in the military......though it pays A LOT more, ........... I've recently come to the realization that I'm not bullet proof & there are certain things I want out of life that are currently out of reach in my current career.

I knew at a very young age that I would join the military & about 7 years into my military career I knew what I would do when I discharged, & I thought this is what I would do until retirement or death.........but plans changed within the last year or so.......now I want different things in life.

So I guess I'm just curious how common this is..........or isn't........who here landed on the X on their first jump & have thus far gotten every thing out of life they expected & wanted, personally or professionally??

Who here thought or knew they were on the right track but then had a unexpected change??

Theres no way in hell I could even have written what would only have been described as a fiction novel back when I was in my teens as to what my life would lay out like... interesting how many paths are layed before you and which were the right ones

My life has not taken anywhere near the path I thought it would, but in many ways, I've ended up where I wanted to be. There's still a few things I want to do/achieve and those are high on my list for the next five years. I've been on what I thought was my life path more than once, only to later discover that I was a million miles from home....

It's what life's about big buddy. Unexpected change, happens to everyone. In one year, I went from a pot smokin, cocain snortin, irresponsible, drug selling, under achiever that made about 30k a year because it got me by to highly motivated, straight edge, law abiding, father of 3, citizen that makes 6 digits a year. All because of a girl. Things happen in life, opportunity presents itself to either make your life better or worse. It's up to you to decide which to seize and which to let pass by. No one hits the X, because that X moves as u age and ur priorities shift.

The opposite also holds true. A bad girl will change things as well

it's funny you should bring this up as i've been thinking about this lately....

when i was younger, i'd said:

    I'd NEVER own a car!
I'd NEVER take a desk job!
I wouldn't live to see the turn of the century!
I would nevver have "love" handles

well, it seems i was totallly wrong.
    I've owned sevveral cars
I'm a CPA, so my job is primarily behind a desk
I'm hoping to live til the middle of this century (only 37 years to go, which would make me a young 88) and be dynamic, vibrant, and still be whooping young pups ass here in this forum
and although no love handles right now, i have had them not too many years ago.

My point is, when you are 20, you really have no idea what's in store for you!

while u may discover it not uncommon to change direction suddenly, this does not necessarily rule out being a retarded weirdo! LOL..

I was in the australian infantry for 4 years. Went to east timor and afghan made it lance corporal did not want to leave the army felt like home and a family i yerned for. But unluckily for me they said i was no longer fit for combat and was going to put me on a desk with all the girls and looser soldiers so i quit and got into the constriction/mining. I make so much more money now but im so much less happier i miss being in the army. I would go back and do it for free if i could

And bear What service branch were you in? And why do americans always use the term military? " i was in the millatry etc" Be proud of your branch and hate the others!!!! And were you really sf like a beret qualified member Or just support for sf? Big differance. Kisses

If you were sf then your a better man than i. I made it to the 2nd week of australian sas selection then i quit i was too mentaly Weak i must not have wanted it as much as i thought i did

About this time 3 years ago, I was about to lose my house, had no one to call my own aside from random hook-ups occasionally, and spent every dime of every paycheck in a bar 7 nights a week. Was headed in a downward spiral before I met the woman I now call my wife. She helped me see the light and got me back on track with the money.

Now have a 15 month old daughter that has a smile that makes all my troubles go a way as soon as I see her in the evening.

All this is not where I saw myself when I thought about the future, and always tried to avoid long term relationships for fear that something would hold me back. In this case though I gave it a chance and now couldn't imagine my life any other way.

I just go with the flow I don't want the stress of planning things and making commitments that may not happen because of events that are out of my control, I left school had a job practically handed to me and just stuck it out. Now I can do what I want when I want.

    Wait, your not bullet proof?

I had you all wrong? Haha j/k!

Change happens, it can be good, it can be bad.

I changed my career path about a year and a half ago and loving it! I had no set path before but could do anything. Now, I have a path that I can actually see now and it has changed me. I'm still the same person but the wants/needs have changed.

I'm happy for you! You big teddy!

If your focus is on what you expect or what you think will happen in your life then imo you're limiting yourself and are blind to bigger/better opportunities.
