WTF happened to music these days??

I'm sitting here with insomnia, it's 7 am and the TV has been on all night, not really paying much attention. I've heard of this broad Kesha. I thought it was Ketchup to be honest, never seen her on TV, just heard announcements on the radio, then I would turn the station.

What is this garbage they're making us look at? Glitter is fine, but what's with all the nasty zombie-like makeup. Between this broad and that lady jenga or whatever, it's a nightmare. Whatever current my TV drew to display that crap was a complete waste.

Mainstream music has always been garbage. I'm not so naive to think that 20-50 years ago it was any better. They just played a different flavour of the same mindless bullshit.

You'll never find actual music except when you dive deep in to niche circles where you find true artists actually performing "real music."

The thing that turns me off the most about conventional musics is that the music is nothing more than a product and the labels (large and small) are specifically designing it to sell to the largest audience of their particular target demographic.

The 90's was tuff. You had hair music starting to die off as Grunge appeared in the early-mid 90's. Then late 90's gave way to some great alternative groups. So many genres in one decade.

There is some great music out there. But the majority of it out there is pire muck. And as a few of the lads said that music back then was crap too but the good heavily out weighed the crap.

Most of the music I listen to the majority of the bands are dead or has had a few members keel over.

Led zep, slayer, pantera, black sabbath, rory gallagher, seasick steve and the rest is what I like. That proper electronica from the 80's and deep house tech house and trance etc

Her flaw is, IMO, that she does all that weird shit and doesn't HAVE to, because she actually has raw talent. She can sing, write, and play music. All those distractions take away from what she can really do, and make people like us think she'st just another fly-by-night pop star.

I honestly don't mind Ke$ha due to her party vibe as well as Flo Rida, but I can't stand shit like Lil' Wayne, Nicki Manaj, Linkin Park (no offense up there), Nickelback, the list goes on.

However, the indie movement of the 2000s has spawned great bands... some of the more popular being bands like Grizzly Bear and Passion Pit. Also love me some Blitzen Trapper.

Stoner metal is great, too... for example, High on Fire (I love squats and deadlifts to that one). My good buddy is in a great stoner band Wo Fat.

The newer 80ish retro vibe that's come back isn't too bad, either... for example, MGMT, Capital Cities, etc.

I agree with that. Originally i thought the concept of 16 and pregnant was horrible idea. Show has helped educate teens. Teen pregnancy rate has also dropped since first year of the show. I don't think that it should be on MTV. MTV should have music videos and all things related to music.

Their is no dening she has a blessed voice....and as far as the rest goes, even though I may not like half her costumes when it comes down to it I respect her as a ****ing genius, yea that's right she played the game of marketability was able to appeal to many different walks of life, show her "artisit" and sing what she choose and the way she choose it.

lol, ok... this is gonna go badly. But - who claimed creativity? I was the first to point out they sound A LOT (not exactly as you're saying - as a musician myself, I can point out many differences) like Tool, generally speaking. But, to the untrained ear, yes, they sound like a Tool rip off. They're definitely a musician's music. But dude... BAD? C'mon man. I want concrete examples of what's 'bad" besides some dude's voice supposedly going flat in a couple spots.

I will say this: he sounds a LOT like Manyard. Is he *trying* to? I don't think so. The guy literally has a voice like Manyard... you can't help your voice. He doesn't necessarily sing with Manyard's cadences, he just *sounds* like him.

For a better example of somebody *trying* to sound like someone else (i.e. singing with somebody's signature style, not just the sound) - Scott Stapp of Creed is clearly TRYING to sound like Eddie Vedder. IMO, there's a big difference.

C'mon man!!! The song writing is very good. The music is technical and proggy without sounding pretentious or flashy (Dream Theater anybody?). Great grooves, and if you know anything about this drummer (which is how I learned of them as he drummed for a fav. band of mine for years), he's considered one of the best 'feel' drummers in the business. This band has some great grooves with technical flares tastefully placed here and there.

I'd like to know what you consider good song writing. That's not a 'challenge'; I really wanna know.

Subjective... but IMO this band is technically more proficient than Tool, however I will concede that SOME of the groove gets lost in some parts that may attempt to be overly technical. Btw, Tool puts out albums - what - every 50 years or so? Personally, I'm glad this band came along and is clearly taking that sound and progressing with it.

The drummer (founding member) of this band is a HUGE Tool fan and has openly said so on several occasions, so it's not one of those Creed situations like I mentioned earlier. Nothing wrong, IMO, with paying homage to a band that you admire so much.
