Peanuts forced off shelves for not containing nut allergy warning.
Peanuts from an independent supermarket chain in Britain have been taken off the shelves because they were not labeled with the warning, "May contain nuts," the British newspaper The Express reports.
The Food Standards Agency issued an allergy alert about the so-called "monkey nuts," forcing the Booths supermarket chain to withdraw its "whole hearted roasted monkey nuts," the paper said.
The British authorities explained consumers might not realize that monkey nuts are peanuts.
"Without the correct information on the packaging, people with an allergy to peanuts who might not know or make the connection between peanuts and monkey nuts, for example children, might eat the product and experience an adverse reaction," the Food Standards Agency said.
Peanut allergy is a serious issue, which can lead to death in a worst case scenario.
But British shoppers thought the authorities were the ones who were nuts. According to the newspaper:
"Jenny Harpin, 56, said, 'If I bought a bag of monkey nuts I wouldn't be too surprised to find they contained nuts."
