Jay Cutler has stated several times before that contest prep is an altogether 4 month period; however, he doesn't get into the details of this 4 month period other than indicating that he weighs food and calculates macros precisely, starts doing cardio in a very disciplined manner and lives the life of a ''monk.'' This is the phase where a pro BB starts ''growing into a show''. During this phase, the idea is to make plenty of lean gains and avoid injuries rather than solely concentrating on loosing BF% rapidly. Fat loss for these pros is a rather slow yet steady process. Also keep in mind that there is the introduction of an insane amount of synthetic hormones and peptides during this phase that certainly allows these pros to be able to make lean gains and loose BF% all at the same time. When do they start getting ripped, then? Well, this really depends on the pro. Some like to get there quicker than others, some don't. It is a matter of conditioning and timing of that conditioning, which simply varies. Manipulating water & sodium intake as well as pre-competition carb loading are the tricks that every single of them have to pull. Phil Heath says he quits all supplementation exactly 7 days before the show in order to be able to manipulate the looks of his physique in the very way he wants but I wouldn't really take the words of a competing pro BB for granted. It could as well be 2 weeks before the show, which would, again, depend on the current conditioning of the pro.

They do remain ripped for a couple more weeks after the show. Maybe the word ''ripped'' is not exactly correct here, but they do definitely stay lean for photo-shoot sessions financed by their sponsors as well as Weider itself (for those who win prestigious titles such as Mr. O, Mr. Universe, Arnold Classic etc.). It is not a great idea for a super heavy weight pro to remain lean for longer than a few weeks after the show for obvious reasons.
